265 70 17 or 275 70 17??

Looking for some opinions on tire options. I have an 05' sr5 with a Daystar 2.5/1.5 lift with stock tires and wheels. I am purchasing the TRD Pro wheels and will be getting new tires. Debating on Nitto Terra Grapplers G2 265 70 17 or maybe the KO2's in the same size. Probably the KO2's especially since you can get a set from discount tire for $680. Haven't seen them this cheap ever I think. That's if you buy two at a time. Question is, will I need spacers, and if I decide to go a size larger to 275 70 17, will I need spacers and or need to trim?

Not sure what direction to go in. I do not drive off road and it's mainly around town.

Daystar 2.5/1.5 Tire Size

03 4runner limited.... I am getting a daystar 2.5/1.5 kit! I'm going to run 265\70\17 General Grabber AT2 tires on mine. After all the research iv done and pics iv looked at I think that size tire is great with out having wheel spacers!! Good luck!!

I'm just going to guess you'll regret it. I have an 08, and I went with 265/70R17s, and there was a ton of rubbing -- especially after the Spidertrax (and I'm up 2.5" level with STs and Nitto TGs). 275s would be even worse, and may not be able to be fixed by simply moving the fender liner forward. I had to trim fender and move the fender liner with 265s, and it still rubs on occasion. It's a bit of a headache.

If you are okay with the headache, I would instead go with 255/75R17s. Go bigger, not wider... My .02.

It does look good though. :)

265/70/17

Thanks for the advice Erkelbot, I already have the tires ordered in the 265/70/17. Its crazy because iv been reading and everyone has said to go with that size on the 2.5/1.5 daystar lift. Do you have any ideas on how to make them fit better other than trimming the fenders? Should I get wheel spacers?

These are 265/70R17s, yes.

You may have better luck than me, since you have an 05. I actually think the fenders were different back then, and allowed a bit more space for turning and rubbing. Before I put the Spidertrax on I had a little less rubbing because the majority of the wheel turn took place inside the fender. Once they were spaced out, the tread made contact with the corners of the fender (more so on the driver's side due to weight on that side -- the batter and such as far as I can tell).

If you're stuck on the tires, which it sounds like you are, try them without the spacers first and see how they fit. I know you'll want to get the spacers in the end because it'll look better, but get an idea of how they fit first. Then get the spacers and see how close they get. If you did have to trim the fenders it's not the end of the world...Just takes a bit of a strong stomach since you're cutting and a sawzall or a dremel. Just prepared to be patient, and cut a small amount at a time...

Is that with the 265/70/17?

I have 275/70/17 on Level 8 MK6 wheels which stick out farther than the TRD pro wheels. I have my coilovers set for about a 2" lift. The left front rubs on the back of the wheel well if I'm turning left and pulling into a driveway. Moving the liner forward is super easy, just pop the plastic connector out, push it forward an inch or so and drill another hole from the bottom.

Another consideration is that the KO2's only come in E rated in the 275.

I'm a little confused...everything I see and or read says I should be fine going to a 265 70 17 with no rubbing or trimming. I thought I may run into issues going bigger.

Maybe I'm the odd duck, but the fender on my truck rubbed bad (and I have read others with the same account). Perhaps most don't' run into issues with the 265 width on 17s? I had to trim at least 1.5"+ of fender to keep the from growling and sounding like they were going to rip the bumper off.

Lots of folks run this tire size though, and seem to have fine luck with it. steveni70 was there a change from 07 to 08 with regard to the fender shape?

265/70/17's here with mild FJ lift and fronts rubbed on both the mud guards and the front underbody cover. I removed the mudguards and relocated the cover and all is good.

This is the trimming that needed to take place on the driver's side. It's the same on the passenger side too. Sorry the picture turned out sideways…

Actually I forgot I trimmed a bit off the plastic bumper. I did this to clear 285s so I can't say if I would still need it. I originally had 255/75/17s with no lift on stock rims and they fit nicely.

I say "go big, or go home". Get some 285's and a 1.5" body lift. You're going to rub regardless, especially with Spidertrax, so why not? You can always add some coilovers later for extra lift, which will help minimize rubbing.

I ran 265/70/17 for 10 years without wheel spacers on my 04 with the Daystar 2 1/2 X 1 1/2 spacers and NEVER rubbed once! 10 years ago I tried to stuff 285's under, but "thought" it would rub after looking at 1 installed so opted for the 265's. At that time the 275 wasn't an option or I would have run those.

After reading a lot on T4r I am realizing that "most" who experience rubbing with 265's / 275's are running wheels spacers or a wheel with different offset. These are trucks and each one is ultimately unique, but in my experience you can run 265's with stock wheels and no spacers with no rubbing.

Ask the shop to order both sizes for you. Have them install the larger on one wheel and test fit to be certain. Discount tire has done this for me and they're going to do it again when I get my new tires in another 15-20k. Hoping to get 285's without a BMC or cutting any fender metal. If it doesn't I'll be going 275's.

Good luck and I'm hoping and optimistic that the 275's will work out for you.
Cheers

Seems like the combo

Do you know how much less backspacing the 15' sr5 wheels have then the 14' sr5 wheels? Im planning on a 2" lift those 15' sr5 wheels and 255/75/17s and wonder if im going to have a bunch of rubbing.

Honestly, I don't...

But, these are off a 2012. Take a look at this thread though, where offset is discussed at length for the Gen 5 wheels (10-13). I'm sure they changed some in 14/15, but this will help guide you with the G5 v1s. If I had to guess though, you'd be fine with 255/75/17s -- you'd probably still need to do some trimming of the bumper (maybe not as much as the 265s), or moving forward of the liner...

Yes.....275/70/17s Again

6112s are adjusted to 2.13"s of lift and I have SPC aftermarket UCAs installed. I have 265/70/17s mounted on 8 hole FJ rims. Rear suspension is icon vcs/dobison 323 coils

Since this particular setup isnt mentioned in the threads ive read. My question is can i mount 275/70/17s on the current set up w/o using spacers? Thanks in advance..

275 vs 265 on -12 offset

Not sure if this is the best thread but wanted to throw this post up so people could compare the differences in tires. Stock kdss no lift. . I recently got new wheels that have -12 offset. I attempted to get 275/75/17's on there but there was way too much rubbing. I downgraded to 265's, which only rub in full lock at reverse. Definitely like the look of the 275's better. I may try to put the bilstein 5100's onat 1.75 and do some front fender cutting... Here is a pic of a comparison for those concerned.
