265/70/17 TG tread width

I just ordered a set of Level 8 Mk6 in 17x9 with a 0mm offset because that was the only width they had in gunmetal and I plan on putting 265/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers on but I can’t find the actual tread width anywhere. The overall width including sidewall bulge is 10.79” but I know the tread width will be less than that. Can someone with 265 Terra Grapplers please measure the tread width for me? I want to make sure it isn’t too narrow before I order them. Otherwise I’m just going to jump up to a 285, but I would prefer to stay at 265. I don’t mind the sidewalls being more or less straight with little or no bulge but I can’t deal with tires that look stretched to fit the wheel. Thanks in advance.

I have the Terra Grappler in the stock 265/70/17 and they look great on my '13 Trail. The installer at Discount Tire even mentioned how well they filled out the wheel well.

Answering your question on tread width is a little confusing...let me explain. The Terra Grappler has more of a square look than the OEM tires and this goes a long way to making the a good fit appearance wise for the wheel well. Then every other tread block either sticks out a little bit with a quarter round void. Or doesn't stick out from the sidewall quite as far, but comes to more or less a square corner.

I like this for a couple of reasons. Firstly it gives the tires a more aggressive look, and secondly the clearance block void prior to the more square corner creates a mini-paddle affect that can give you a little advantage in mud or sand. The TA does pretty well in mud for an All Terrain, and is really good in sand. Especially loose coarse sand.

However it begs the question where do you measure the tread from? The wide point of the outward tread block with a quarter round void? Or the wide point of the tread that is finished out to the corner? I measured carefully and came up with a tread width of 8.75 inches using a mid point between the two.

I'll end by saying there are a lot of 4 Runners and Jeep Wranglers in my area, and I've seen them with a wide variety of tire choices. The Nittto TA looks as good or better than any of them, especially in terms of filling out the wheel well and appearing a match for vehicles with a smooth street / good off road design like the T4R. I looked up tread width for my tires many moons ago and then measured it myself. The only way I got the same tread width measurements as published was to go to the middle of the transition radius where it rolls over to the sidewall. The OP wants a 9" rim so his tread will be narrower than his wheel!

Thanks for taking the time to measure for me, Maz. I think I'll be okay with the overall width of the tire being 10.79" and tapering down to 8.75" on a 9" wheel. Nitto says the tire fits a 7"-9" wheel so I guess I'll roll the dice and hope for the best. I really doubt you'll be able to see 0.125" with the naked eye. I'm a land surveyor and trust me, that little bit is tough to see.

Here's an idea. I got Discount Tire to price match a great deal from another tire company on my Terra Grapplers. Then for my wife's car I first had them install a new set of OEM tires, then decided to havethem put on the highest rated tires for her model. It only cost the difference in price, with no re-install charges.

You have three Discount stores in Winston Salem, and Discount normally carries the Terra Grappler in stock. Maybe you should get your best price and try to get them to price match it. Then insist they get their very best installer to use kid gloves while carefully protecting your beautiful new wheels. That would include hand tightening the lug nuts to avoid power impact wrench rash.

Put on one, or maybe even two on one side of your rig then stand back to admire and see what you think. Worst case scenario you have all four installed and take a day or two to keep looking until you're either satisfied...or switch to another tire / size.

You're spending a lot of money on the rims and need to get the best tire for both looks and performance. Discount is very smart in letting satisfied customers do their marketing for them. Don't be shy about letting them earn your trust and your business.

The shop through which I'm ordering my tires is giving me a much better deal because they put tires (Terra Grapplers) on all 15 of our work trucks. I'm going to see if they'll test fit one 265 and one 285 and see which I like.
