270 hp In 05 4runner?

The people over at Clublexus.com have confirmed that the GX470 in 05 will VVT-i which brings the h.p up to 270. HAs anybody heard this in regards to the 4runner?

I will believe it when i see official report from Toyota/Lexus. It's not easy just to add VVTi to an old engine. In fact, i have never heard of any company doing this to an older engine...one that was not designed for VVTi initially. I am not even sure if VVTi can increase power that much. VVTi is usually used to increase efficiency and broaden the torque curve (flatter).

The only thing that is confirmed on Clublexus.com is by one or two people after hearing it from their salesman. When was the last time a salesman knew anything about the car they are selling???!!

Of course, i could be wrong...hopefully, i am.

My V8 is enough power for me. Add in a SC and exhaust and I would be even happier.

The 4.7 was designed to have that system when it built. I remember when I had my Tundra the factory rep was telling me about it. If you look at the front of the camshaft housing you will see rubber plugs, caps that cover up the hole where it would go. I do believe that Toyota will have to do something just to keep up with the competition.

However, the 4.7L V8 engine is based on the PREVIOUS generation LS400 engine (which did not have VVTi). The 4.7L V8 came on the Land Cruiser in 1998...so the engine was designed before 1998...probably mid-90's.

Again, i hope that you're right.

One more thing that i am afraid of with the "new" engine is the need for premium fuel. If Toyota do modify the current 4.7L V8 to make 270 HP, then it is likely that compression ratio will go up...thus, making PREMIUM fuel a requirement, instead of a recommendation.

With gas prices rocketing in recent times, i am not sure if it's a good idea.

Yes I do agree with you in regards to premium fuel.

To EDGE. Yes I agree with you also, but... If you look and compare h.p to the competition the 4runner is at the bottom, or very near. Even the v6 MDX is making more horses than our V8.

Horsepower sells cars.

Torque moves them.

Big deal. A extra few horses, how fast do you want your 4x4 high center of gravity to travel? More hp also equals worse mileage.

I'll run my current V8 against a MDX any day.

You hit the nail on the head. " horsepower sells cars" Toyota is in the business of selling cars.

When the average person shops for a car, they only pay attention to the word "horsepower." They do not look at any other aspect of the cars performance. When I tell people that my car has 235 hp, they tell me how underpowered that is. What? 235hp + 320 ft/lbs of torque = one fast 4Runner! Well, I guess an extra 35 horses would help!

Horsepower does sell cars. Thats why I laid down half of my bonus money to do the s/c mod on myh rig.
