Finally the AT20's are off! After spending months searching for what i really wanted for the runner i decided on Toyo Proxes S/T's in a slightly wider but lower aspect ratio.
Visually i do miss the WOL on the sides as the toyos are black but the tread pattern looks great and the truck looks a bit more sporty just from behind as the tread is stands out quite a bit more now.
Driving impressions- Although i have only put on 50 miles on these tires so far there are some quick impressions that they have left.
On smoother surfaces they are much smoother than the dunlops but at higher speeds especially, over more unprepared or worn surfaces they do transmit more road noise than before. Nothing that is outrageous but certainly it is noticeable. Ride quality is hardly affected but now you hear smaller bumps more and those that you actually feel, you feel slightly more direct than before. The ride has not gotten rough but just more direct..
Response- I really wasnt prepared for the change in turn-in response and established response that these tires have. For the first 10 miles or so, they seemed to dart more over the road, due to the wider 275 measurment but also they are just that more responsive in the sidewall than the dunlops could ever be. I have now decided that because of the lack of feedback from the steering and their aggressive response to imputs both intended and non intended from road imperfections, that 2 hands is now better than one. I will move back to the normal "one hand over the top" manuver of steering when i am adjusted.
I will withhold and overall grip comment as these tires are going to need some 500 miles to really open up and show what they have but initial impressions is that they are far superior to the Dunlops.
Besides being slightly more "needy" than the dunlops in the way of imputs, the tires and the steering take some getting used to. With the steerings good weight but lack of communication you can actually feel the truck grabbing but there is little ramp up or feedback going through. Granted there is more now than with the dunlops as that was like steering with a dead fish but the steering just lacks the precision that i like, but then again its a damn Toyota 4runner and not a sports car. Ive alwys been impressed with the weight but was hoping that the tires were more of the issue and not the steering...not the case. The syrup is still there.
Overall i am impressed, and im happy that the tires have provided what i am looking for, a more direct feel without going to a very low aspect ratio and keeping very light trail capability. Im just disappointed that the tires could not help the steering's overall precision, even with the tires more willing responses...
Tires great, steering not so much...oh well its a 'yota, not a ferrari.
