285 70 17 Duratrac Used - worth it?

Hey all,

Meeting up with someone from CL tomorrow to take a look at their used 285 70 17 Duratracs (LR D). He's asking $600, and I think that's fair considering their stated condition (12/32's-ish is claimed). What do you all think? He's also throwing in a spare condition 285 KO2.

I'm more tempted by getting used Duratracs instead of new since I really don't daily my 4R at all, and I'll probably have to retire them from age before wear. Plus the Duratracs that were on my 3rd gen when it got totaled where around 12/32s anyway, so it's really close to what I had, which is fine.

I would offer less than that for 12/32, you can get brand new ones during the ebay event discoutn tire direct for $850 after discounts and rebates shipped to your door. I would pay closer to $400 for those used or just buy new.

Used tires I am not a fan

Unless they are newer take offs, I would buy new.

I get that, and I always only buy tires during that sale, but I wasn't in a good spot to get them this past sale, and I can't wheel on the tires I currently have. So...I need tires well before their November sale.

Best I can muster new right now is $150 off with Discount's upcoming Memorial Day sale.

Considering new is 18/32's on these, that's not terrible since I drive my 4R a few times a month at most. Right?

Always the risk of getting a tire out of round, death wobble at certain speeds etc that you cant tell just by looking at them. If its a huge price difference than new then sure, but I wouldnt take a chance on someting that close to retail. If he lets it go for $400 or less then I would chance it.

I am 51 years old and owned many lifted trucks and a bunch of performance cars. Some where 1500 bucks others went as high as 80k. I was young and broke, well off and now paying for college. So I have been there and done that. You can’t put a price on your health or safety. Unless it’s a good friend or your brother you don’t know exactly what your getting. I would not skimp on safety.

True. The Duratracs on my 3rd gen had a hell of a time balancing, and I should have just anted up for a Road Force Balance in the first place like I did with my Pilot Super Sports on my R.

Seems high to me. Great tires, but you could do better on the price.

Sounds like if I can get him down to $4-500 it might not be bad.

I'm mainly interested in them as something to get me through this summer until I'm in a better spot to take advantage of the next Discount Direct sale.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I apply this same rule to other aspects of my life, like life/safety equipment when it comes to climbing, OEM vs aftermarket when it came to my LBJ's in my 3rd gen (I went OEM), etc.

However, won't any glaring safety concerns be called out when I go to get them mounted at Discount? I feel like issues that would compromise a tire are visible during inspection. Is that not the case?

Just check the date of manufacture also

From the seller:

"No known patches/plugs, they were mounted when I got them and I don’t see any from the outside. They balance up nice and are currently holding air. I think one may have a little more wear, but when I drove on them I didn’t notice any vibrations. "

Sooo they were used when he bought them. The rest of that sounds peachy though. Might give me room to offer lower then. The mfg date is 4615, so late 2015 which isn't old really.

I would be more hesitant knowing they were on previous to this owner having them as you have no clue how the person before ran them, rotated them etc. However, yes you can do a visual inspection and you can check for tire dust inside the tire too as that is a visual indicator for a blow out from the inside out. Its just more of a gamble that you take buying used and from two previous owners that they will balance correctly and drive nicely. I would never pay for a 2 previous owner tire for $600, I wouldnt go higher than $400. If its not your daily and you are just having them get you by till the fall I would do it and use them as a fun wheeling tire. Also like mentioned earlier check the manufacturer date if they have been with another owner previous to that they may be older than you think even though they still have 12/32 I think around 6 years is what I remember....

Yeah, he posted a pic of the mfg date and they're from 4615, so late 2015, which is good.

As to your other points, yep, not my daily and just having them until fall or next spring when I can take advantage of the Discount Direct sale. Or hell if they run fine then I'll just keep them until they wear down.

They've been listed for a bit now, but I hate lowballing people. I don't think it's an unfair price though considering all of that.

Money Math

One stand point is this - Take the tread depth as a marker. You know by 15-20% of tread depth they are basically done... so you only get ~ 80% of original tread.

New = 100% tread and 100% cost (this isn't even factoring 'sales' and discounts, etc.)

Used at 50% wear = ~ 20% -25% tread left

New price X 0.25 = USED retail value

Just my opinion but it kills me that people will ATTEMPT to sell a $250 new tire with 70% tread wear for $125-$150... Like WTF??? And it's COMMON on CL... like all day, every day...

I do $ math a little differently though... haha
