General Grabber AT/X or Toyo Open Country III

Torn between these two tires. I know they are very similar but here we are. I am also debating in getting the Toyo's in a 255/80/17 as my first set of skinnies. I'm just concerned with the handling characteristics of the skinnies.

I'm coming from 285/70/17 Duratracs. They're great tires just awful loud once they wear down a bit. Hit me with some pics and your opinions if you switched to skinnies from the 285's. Thanks!

I have the tall & skinny tires on my 4th gen...I'm rocking Cooper ST MAXX and man, they are incredible! No issues at all with handling...in fact, I think you get more traction (science agrees too) than wider tires. You will effectively have less issues braking, less stress on your steering and suspension, and boast higher pressure to the ground where you need it...perhaps even a slight bump in MPG with less rotational mass...

If those are the only tires you'd consider, I suggest the Toyo AT3...they are one of the most popular tires for a reason...though, I had poor luck after 10k miles on my old toyos when rain and winter came...the Coopers have been MUCH better and retaining tread and there are NO needs for chains on ice, mud or snow...and boast 55k mile warranty...just throwing that out there...

I have the ATX's on one of my 4runners and I like them alot. Fairly quiet, fuel mileage did not change much. Had a set of the AT2's that the ATX's replaced on my GMC Sierra. Never had to use 4x4 on it. Plus they also come with a reasonable warranty for all terrains.

Thanks! I forgot all about the Cooper's, I'll have to compare them to the Toyo's, since I am leaning towards the pizza cutters.

I’m running 255/80/17 Toyo at3 and am very happy with them. A noticeable improvement vs the old at2s I were running, and surprisingly comfortable for a e-load tire.

I’m a fan of the pizza cutter look.

My next set of 255/80's will be the AT3 toyos, ridge grapplers, or the 34/10.50/17 KO2's. I see you're in RR, I'm in NW ABQ if you want to check my tires out.

Here are the Cooper ST MAXX shown from this morning...I agree with the difference between the Toyo ATIIs and the latest AT3s...far better overall...The Coopers are heavy but I have zero complaints on how long, how well they perform in all conditions, and how well they look!

I recently went with a newer tire, the BFG Trail Terrain, which is a bit less aggressive than the K02. However, this was actually my 3rd choice. I really wanted some Michelin AT2s but they didn't come with white lettering in my tire size, then the Yokohama Geolanders were on back order. So far I've had no traction issues with the BFGs on sand and they are relatively quiet.
