Ok guys I think I already know the answer but just want to double check. I have a chance to pic up some 285/70/17 tires but I have the stock height still and no spacers. My thought is that I will need both of these to run these tires is that true?

You will need a lift & wheel spacers.

Check out Josh's (HB 4x4) signature.

He's an Off-Roading nut!! :awais:

...and Kenny is correct, you will need both.

And you'll need something (screwdriver) to take off the mud flaps. And then something else (dremel/cutter) to hack off the inner fender. And most likely, something (plasma cutter/welder) to reshape the body mounts. And finally, a big hammer to pound in the body panels welds that will also rub.

But yeah, lift and spacers (or new wheels with larger backspacing) will work. :satan:

You don't need to touch the body mounts or the body panel welds. Just remove the mudflaps and do some trimming of the front plastic and/or move the plastic lining forward.

I completely disagree. If you're flexing, your rubbing. I've got 285/70/17 BFG AT's and they used to rub before all the hacking I described. Think I'm alone? Ask others that wheel.

Well I was wheeling with Josh and another guy running 285 BFG MT's and neither of them had rubbing problems.

So many guys run 285's without any of those changes you described and have zero problems. Lots of which do some serious wheeling.

Because I don't wheel and I don't have 285's?

If you did all of that chopping to your truck, on the bright side it's lighter. :lmao:

Do you have sufficient lift? Wheel spacers and/or aftermarket UCA's? What setup do you have that made you have to do all of that. IMO it sounds like you are lacking in one area or another for it to do that. Never heard of that kind of chopping with tires until you go up to 34's and 35's.

03 V8. ARB front + Winch. CBI Rear w/tire carrier. 1.5" body lift.
OME-N142/OME-897 rear, N140S/OME886 front. Camburg UCA's. America Racing Crater Wheels w/4.5" backspacing. Custom rear cargo drawers. Lots of weight. I read how some folks are fine, but I wasn't and I know others that went thru the same mods as I did to stop the rubbing. Cutting back the the body mounts just behind the tire was the biggest hassle. The rest was quick and painless.

What's the stock backspacing? Maybe those wheels don't have enough offset? Or too much?

No rubbing and I've been on some very rocky trails.

Same. I have never heard of anyone else with this problem when running 285's but since he claims that he knows many people who do, I am curious what this small group of people did differently to cause rubbing that most people don't get.

Even people with 295/70/17 don't have these issues.
