285/70 v. 33 x 12.5

Well its nearing the time, my d'flops have almost 49k on them, I think two of them posses nails so I am VERY eager to scrap em and upgrade.
The tires im considering are the Cooper STT's and Toyo Open Country MTRs. Id like to get the toyo, but will most likely go with the cooper to save a few clams.
But here is where im stuck, WHICH size....
I know that the bigger tire is going to require more trimming, but just how much more? I REALLY feel (imo) that wider is better, and would undoubtedly be satisfied with the 12.5" wide tire. I feel like if i get the 285/70 (32.7 x 11.2) that Ill always be wondering how it woulda been with MORE tire. I hate to be the typical 'bigger is better' type, but I want to maximize..... that being said I also DONT want to remove most of my front bumper. In the future, shrockworks please yes, but thats a year or two down the road maybe.
So id like to get yalls input. 33x12.5 doesnt even seem big to me anymore when i see them in person....its a shame its not easier to get in there on the T4R.

the price diff. is only $50

On a side note: best case scenario ill find a set of the 18" bbs (ala crozhawk) as my rolling stock.... maybe PC the arms and leave the lips polished.....

Why don't you go with the 275/70-17's. Goodyear makes one and so does somebody else that I can't seem to recall now. They will cost you almost $200 a piece though. I'm considering this route whenever the time comes. I only have 30k on my runner now and the Donefloppies still have about 15-20k thread life left. (I live in southern California where there isn't much rain or snow.) Otherwise, I'd change them out at around 40k. Good luck in your search and please post some pics of your final decision.

Im thinking that ill probably end up with the 285/70s.... I dont mind trimming, but I just dont want to have to gut my truck inorder to fit decent sized tires...which would prolly be needed with the 33x12.5s
but who knows........

The goodyears are nice tires tho, they kinda remind me of the toyos visually.

well funny thing is im actaully getting the same setup as you.. im puttting in teh OME spring and shocks this weekas well as the body lift...and some 1.5" wheel spacers.. now like you imstuck on wheels..im trying to keep the stock rim.. so im thinking about some 285/75/16 BFG AT KO... how do you like the suspension adn the bodylift so far???

Ive put on almost exactly 10k miles and its still as tight and fresh as new! Its a great combo IMHO!

I am also leaning keeping the stock wheels, ive always liked em myself, and I cant seem to find those BBS wheels ANYWHERE anyways. So maybe next time around, but for now I think itll be the stock wheels, and the 285/75....

275 here but your right about the Goodyears price$. Like a claw hammer - confidance so hight I don't run a spare. ATS's are great but $. In the past I had went from ATS to BFG back to ATS on this rig.

Did you ever decide on the 33" x 12.5" x 17 tires? I'm looking at a set of D i c k Cepek FC-IIs, but not sure about the 12.5" width.

i went with the narrower 285/70s.
I have slight rubbing on the body mounts now at full turning going down hill.... but once they are trimmed ill see how it is and maybe get the 12.5" width next time......just not sure, I HATE RUBBING. new bumpers would help heh

thx, my plan is to run 285's on FJ wheels. I am not sure if the extra 15mm offset is enough.

I think the stock off-set is 15mm? I am looking at new wheels with 0mm off-set, and would likely add the spider trax at 1.5" for a total per side increase in stance of 53.1mm = 2.1" vs. stock. I'm willing to trim the bumper, but would like to line the wheel well with either an undercoating rubberized spray, or a plastic liner to prevent stones from destroying the sheet metal which could be exposed if I need to remove the liner. I really want these tires, but I want to make sure they will work. I was hoping somone else had already strapped on the "big ones" and tried this before. I think that I'll give it a go, and MAKE it work.

a member by the name of Crozhawk WAS running 33 x 12.5 toyo open country MTRs, but I think he recently went up to a 34" tall tire and im unsure about the width. He seems to be over on toyota120.com most of the time.

Took my junk off the market (only posted it here) - no offers and yet to find anything worthy of replacing it. I did test drive an H1 but the wife would have gone mental. It also would not fit in the carport.

I also fell in love with my rig again on an overnight trip to Osceola NF. I removed by back seat long ago to get a bit more room. Perfect for car camping. I used the cushions from the couch in my office to sleep on. Very plush and the best night in the rig yet.

yeah the ONLY time i miss the boards is when im washing the roof or when i want to take a leak on the trail and not step in muck, or just stand on the door sill which is what i do now.... its just more of a 'bend' at 6'2

You're body lift looks awesome! That's next on my list.
