285 Nitto's

I am thinking about upgrading my tires soon to 285's, and I really oppose to anything other than Nitto's as they have performed great. However, a dilemma arises, with the spare mounting options. I don't want it on my roof, but I don't want to fork out the $$ for a rear carrier, which I am not very fond of the aesthetics on anyways.

My question is if I go up to 285 NTG's, what's the worst that could happen from keeping a 265 as a spare? If I need it, can I use it? Having a small spare makes me nervous.
