285's and gearing

I realize with tires, lift, rack and an awning I'll never get stock back.
I wouldn't over gear it. More gear will help in town mileage almost every time.
They key is to find the right gear that is a happy medium.
It's also easier on the trans as well.
When you add 2" or more to the tire diameter, it's not a question of should it be done. In the same way you don't throw a huge camshaft in a heavy car with big tires, stock gears and converter.

Define pricey...

I bought my e locker rear third with 4.10's for $400. I modified my housing and swapped it in. I picked up a matching 8" clamshell out of a 2011 Tacoma for $150. Swapped out a bushing and the long tube with my non disconnect and bolted the entire new housing in.

Doing gears and doing them right isn't that hard in toyotas. Especially when you have such a range in factory available ratios and most everything interchanges.

When I looked into re gearing my old jeep. It was 400$ per diff in parts. And setting up a new ring and pinion isn't for the faint at heart. I did it in the old jeep. I wouldn't do it on my 4Runner. I've seen the carnage that happens when it's not set up right.

That's what I'm saying. You don't have to setup gears in a Toyota like you do the Dana axles in your jeep.

The entire 3rd of a Toyota comes out as one piece. The pinion, carrier, gears...all of it. Simply find the ratio you want out of another yota and bolt it in...there is no setting them up.....they're still setup the way they came from the factory by Toyota.

Yeah I get it. It's just tough finding used thirds. At least here in Florida. East coast gear wants like 650 just for a rear third with no locker. If I could find a 4.10 third with e locker for 400 I would jump on it. And if you want to go lower than 4.10 you have to go after market. My lift is coming at the end of the summer hopefully. I'd like to gear it lower. And I may have to to pull my 28 foot travel trailer. But by my calculations it will cost at least another 1000 bucks to re gear.

Even though I have a lot of experience, (doing one now at work) I would probably get units from east coast.

The going price seems to be around $500. I used to see them on eBay all the time but haven't looked in a while.

If I'm not mistaken, they came from the factory in 4.30 and 4.56 varieties too. All 8" will interchange. Finding the front clamshell will be difficult in 4.30 as I believe they just recently started using that ratio in the new style front diff. 4.56 should be more common. I kinda wish the 4th gen would've retained the old 7.5" front...id love to be able to run a land cruiser high pinion e locker in the front.

Anyway....I definitely do not regret regearing it. Being in Florida I'd imagine you don't have many hills...here in tn is a different story. I like being able to pull them without it constantly downshifting to maintain speed.

Before the lift, tires, gears, and armor / winch I was getting 19.3mpg. The lie o meter on the dash says I'm at 18.5 now.

I agree with the re-gear and I hate to say this but espescially in the v8. I have the v6 but have driven several v8's and being in 4wd all the time just feels sluggish. I just helped a buddy swap in 4.56 gears in his 07 v8, toyota gear swaps are not too bad way easier than dana swaps. He is running the equivalent of a 34" tire and with the new gears the power is perfect.
