2jz swap

Has anyone attempted this? Looking to do the swap myself so cost would be low but I am more or less worrying about the length of it. Any helpful advice would be great

This is kinda sorta relevant- Theres a guy I follow on IG that is currently swapping a 2JZ into a 1st gen taco. He posts some interested stuff of his build in progress. Would recommend you ask him some questions. His user name is 2jz_tacupra

Please take no offence here yet if you're asking this question I don't think you're ready for the hoard or problems an engine swap would induce around the 4th gen chassis.

I had the pleasure to use the Toyota online service manuals interface. The canbus communication systems across the chassis is wildly myriad.

To imagine changing the ECU without extensive experience on the topic would be... crazy... insane. Bananas.

Obviously one would need to move to an aftermarket stand-alone ECU that can handle all the other functions that the 2UZ's ECU used to handle, like the transfer case functions, ABS/ATRAC/DAC/VSC, door locks (remember, it can autolock at 30km/hr)... the list goes on and on.

I read about a guy who put a 1GZ-FE into a Supra... if you set your mind to something, it can be done... if you can throw enough time and money at the problems to overcome them.

Just be reasonable and realistic with yourself at what's within your abilities and budget.

Not trying to sound like an *** but why wouldn't I be ready for a swap? Isn't the the point to ask the question in the process of starting the build? Now I've done a 2jz swap before.... Pretty confident I can do it my self if it will fit... More or less if it will fit I can make it happen. Standalone ecu would probably be the way to go but if I where to do it instead of a s/c it would be kept realistically stock. Maybe 400hp but that's it. Tbh probably be better to s/c rather then swap but I want something different

Project: SupraRunner 2jzgte swap - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum

If it fits in a 2nd gen it'll 'fit' in a 4th I'm guessing.

Or just throw in a supercharger and get 100+ hp for $6k

If you are going to swap a motor, it would just be better to do it to an older 4Runner that doesn't have much power to begin with that way you would have something special. A 4th gen with a 2jz isn't really an upgrade.

How do you figure it's not an upgrade? Going to forged internals and a cast iron block, not to mention the turbos?

Thank you! Definitely will give him a shout.

I really don't know much about the characteristics of a 2jz vs the V8 or V6 found in the 4runner so correct me if my assumptions are wrong.

I'm just not sure why you'd swap out a decent truck engine in a decent truck for a high performance car engine where you wouldn't gain any or maybe loose some low-end torque the stock motor had. I would rather see a LS swap, a little more suited to a truck IMO. Now if you are building your 4Rrunner for the street as more of a car and lowering it... I could see where a twin turbo 2jz setup would be pretty sweet.

If you have the V8 4runner URD makes a supercharger with 5psi of boost you can get +100hp and tq. If you have the V6, you can probably get even higher numbers just talk with URD or research to see what they have done with that engine in the past. Throwing on a supercharger may not be cheaper than a 2JZ swap depending on how frugal you can get, but it comes with likely a lot less headache.

As for the forged internals, the stock engines can likely take 5psi of boost for a couple hundred thousand miles without strengthened internals. Not a needed upgrade but I could be wrong.

But don't misunderstand I think with the right mods a street 2jz 4runner would be sick I just couldn't feel right throwing it in a truck I planned to go offroad with but I could just be weird like that. I would be a fan of your truck regardless of what you planned on using it for with a 2jz but I definitely feel it wouldn't be an upgrade for me, I already have the BA V8.

I’m all for project cars and doing something different, but do you have a budget for this build? Do you know how to properly program the software for full stand alone engine management? Do you have access to a 4wd dyno, necessary to safely tune the engine?

I can see this build easily surpassing $15,000 before it’s done.

As for the torque curve of a 2jz, depending upon tuning and turbo selection, it isn’t difficult to give the 2j a nice fat, wide torque curve

I think a properly swapped and tuned 2JZ would be badass in a 4Runner. I live at 6500' and work at 7000' and I'm usually in the higher mountains when I have any spare time, so I would absolutely love some boost in my 4th gen (thinking of SC'ing our 5th gen that needs it more than our 4th gen).

OP- I say go for it. Don't let the naysayers talk you out of it.

No worries man. Lots of people get crazy swap ideas... like me!

I found this:

OK, I have an Aristo 2JZ-GTE in my garage right now, waiting for a swap. I just ran down and took the measurements.

Head
8 1/4" wide (edge to edge)
30" wide (edge of stock twins to edge of intake manifold)

Engine
31" long, pulleys to starting edge of bellhousing (end of block)
27" tall, bottom of pan to top of valvecover

Oil sump
11" long, starts 5" back from edge of pulleys
13 1/2" wide

Hope that helps, PM me if you need anything else.

Dave

From here:

need physical dimensions of 2jz

I can measure my 2UZ length and rad clearance if you want. I think between the different JZ versions there's probably sump that would work with the front suspension. There was a thread on supramania somewhere that detailed all the different JZ sumps.

I second the LS swap. LS block is basically the same size as our v8's so fitment is simple. Sourcing a 6.0 starting next year for mine
