This is my 2nd SAS 4runner project. The first one was sold to fund the move to CO and to star Addicted. This time around I went with another 88' 4runner with a 22RE/5spd instead of the A/T.

So, yesterday I started the SAS. I drove it to the shop, and we immediately started cutting By the end of the day the IFS was out, front springs hung and axle housing was under the rig.

Today I didn't get an early start, but by the end of the day the rear is ready to set the pinion angle. We also moved the front hanger back 1/2" since we had a less than stellar front shackle angle.

Hopefully tomorrow we will have the 37s bolted on, front axle assembled, and everything else mounted making it drivable until next Tuesday. In the meantime I will build the 5.29 3rds and prep the tub for the dual case install.

Here is the rig I am starting with

Trailgear makes a nice kit... As you can see, it goes on relatively well.

I see you have a nearby Harbor Freight too.

Do us all a favor though and stuff a few tires under the truck in case those jacked up jack stands give out when you're under there...

Keep up the pics. ;)

i can see that he removed the IFS, and i have heard a lot of people doing it, but why? i dont understand. is it that the SFA (solid front axle) is stronger? because it was my understanding that IFS was stronger, better handling and so on and so on. if someone can explain why go to a solid front axle and ditch IFS, i would greatly appreciate it...

Just no way that IFS is even close to stronger. This rig is a family wheeling rig and also will be used to drive from Colorado to the Rubicon, Dusy Ershim, etc. To handle those kinds of trail, you do need a solid front axle. Not saying it can't be done with an IFS rig, but I wouldn't want to.

You make it look so easy. I think I will keep with my ifs for now though, I do too much driving on road and prefer the better road performance. That does look good though...
How is the driveability with the 37" and those gears?
O.K ... it looks really good . How much did that setup cost? If you don't mind answering.

I am a dealer, so my parts are at cost. Its really not that bad though.

I daily drove my old sas'd 88' on 35s, but it was a A/T which really sucks the power. This one should be better.

It actually drives great on the street. I have ridden in a buddy's lifted IFS and in my opinion(and his) mine rides MUCH better. He has a 4" skyjacker kit and it rides like crap. We'll be doing an SAS for him shortly.

84-85 4runners with solid axles handle and ride extremely well. My neighbor has an 85' Xtra cab and I preferred it to my IFS.

The IFS just wears out over time, creates slight wobbles and is a mUCH weaker setup.

Did you have a big write up about the white 88 in a different forum in the spring? You were in califirnia I think. If that was you then I wanted to buy it but couldn't come up with enough and bought my '87 in Texas instead. :D

Yup, that was me. I built that one while working for All-Pro.

You did some nice work there, I wish I had the money to drop my truck off with you for a make-over. Lots of nice custom tubework as I recall. :bigok:

Your welds look almost as good as the factory trailgear welds do... Great work.

Btw, are those 6 stud high steer arms there with only 4 studs in them?

Yeah, they are. TG sent me those. Must have been out of the four hole ones or just don't feel like dealing with them anymore.

I also installed the ARP knuckle studs at the same time.

Makes sense... At least with those in there you can always upgrade to the 6 stud steering knuckles easily in the future if you ever feel the need.

Quick update. Dual cases are now in. For now I am just running the 2.28 stock rear case. I'll add a 4.7 gear set if I think I need it. As it stands I am at 108:1 with the 5.29s. We'll see how that plays out.

I need to find a decent shifter boot. I think I am going to grab a front shifter boot setup and cut it to fit the new shifter.

I also added some sweet 85' SR5 4runner seats to the rig. I found these in a wrecked 85' that John and I grabbed some parts off of. They are in incredible condition now that I was able to clean them up.

84/85 Toy axle is best IMO. I have used All-Pro's kit and Trail-Gear's kit.

TG is a more complete kit, but Marlin, All-Pro and Trail-Gear are all pretty much the same.
