2nd fuel tank for 2006 4runner

Hello everyone,

I am travelling in Australia, and have noticed a lot of their Toyota Prados (equivalent to 4Runner in the states) have 2 fuel tanks (totalling 180 litres, or 47.5 gallons). They come shipped like this from Toyota's factories. I would really like to have this on my 2006 SR5 4Runner (V8, 4x4) back home.

Does anyone know how simple it would be to do this? Or how much it might cost? Where could I go do get something like this done? I was thinking I would remove the spare tyre from underneath the rear of the car, and mount it on the back. Has anyone done something like this? I'm just looking for ideas...thanks!!

This has come up in the past. For most of us in the U.S./Canada the answer is it would be cost prohibitive to get the Aussie spec parts to do the conversion. Perhaps for you doing a conversion to Prado spec would be easier on the wallet because you're there. Perhaps buying the parts and having them shipped makes sense (although I doubt it).

In the U.S./Canada the closest thing to what you want is what some of the FJCruiser guys have done. FJ Cruiser Auxiliary Fuel Tank --> INSTALLED - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum It would require re-locating the spare tire to an aftermarket rear bumper or the roof...
