2nd gear--tranny not shifting

Hello-
Just bought a 2001 with 28k miles. I noticed going down the same hill every day to work that while in 2nd gear, it doesnt want to shift to 3rd. The engine revs very high then finally goes into 3rd.
This happens in the morning on a very cold engine. It has been in the 20's here--Cleveland winters.

Any feedback?

my engine will do the same thing if it hasnt been warmed up properly. it sits in second unless you get up to around 30-45 mph range and make it shift at around 4000 rpm. but once its warmed up it shifts normally.

really? That is good to hear. I was a bit concerned because with my last ride, it meant the beginning of the end of my transmission.

I will take it easy as it warms up then.

Just curious.....how do mean "warmed you properly"
How do you recommend warming up the truck?

well it will do that until the engine is about 1/3 up on the temp guage or so.

dont worry, you arent doing any harm. im sure you dont have time to let it just sit there till its totally warm, and driving certainly warms it up faster.

just let it sit on for 10-15 seconds after you turn the key, then shift and start to drive. dont worry about 2nd gear shifting, mine does this as does every 3rd gen.

And 2nd Gen 3.0L too, It's a Toyota thing all is normal.

The reason I purchased the 4Runner was due to the fact that my 1992 Volvo tranny is dying!
