2nd gen 4runner whine

I test drove a 1995 v6 4runner with 92k, it was a 5 speed and it was very loud it made a whining noise through 1st and 2nd gear, i didnt get any higher. im comming from a 1998 4runner automatic which was fairly quiet. the 95 seemed in pretty good mechanical condition. is the whine normal? any help would be appreciative. thank you.

Don't think it's normal. My '90 5-speed doesn't whine.

I think sometimes the wrong type of gear oil can cause problems like that, but I'm no expert.

The noise is probably from the tranny or diff. Sometimes if you replace the ring and pinion gear you get a whine when it is misaligned. Get into 3 and 4 gear and see if it still whines because it is a stick and probably used for offroading there is a good possibility that 1st and 2nd gear have had some serious abuse. Inquire about the diff see if he changed the ring and pinion or maybe he put a locker.
