2nd Gen 4WD questions

I just got a 93 4Runner automatic, and I am wondering if someone could explain the 4WD system to me. I have always been a "Get out and lock the hubs" kind of guy and don't really understand these push-button systems.

Here is my scenario: I was at the beach yesterday, and got a little stuck in the sand. I pushed the little button on the "Hi-Lo" lever and put it in lo and the green 4WD light came on and I got myself unstuck.

Got on pavement and put it back in Hi, then pushed the button again and the green 4wd light has not gone off yet.
Is something stuck? Am I still in 4WD? Can I drive it like this?
I have looked all over the interwebs and can't find what I am looking for. I have tried everything I could find, though, like putting it in reverse and slamming on brakes and all of that.

If you have any doubts jack up front tire and try to spin it. If it spins your not in 4wd. But if your light goes away after going back to 2wd then you shouldnt be in
4wd. Its a automatic locking hub.
 
Thanks, but that is a LOT more than I want to get into right now. I jacked up one side, and the tire did not rotate, so I am guessing I am in 4wd still. Is there an easy way to disengage? Maybe bang on something with a BFH or something?

that is still 4wd, just high range.

isnt there a 2wd option on the switch?
 
You need to put it into H2 take a picture of what your pushing to get it into 4wd. You dont want to drive it on pavement while in 4wd

Well that was strange.
I just went out to start it up so I could roll up the windows and the 4WD light was off. Out of curiosity, I pushed the 4wd button and heard it engage and the light came on. Pushed it again and nothing, so while in "Park" I got out and rocked the truck forward and back several times. When I got back in, the light was off.

I guess I solved the problem. Sort of.

No, there is no 2wd option on the selector level. There are 3 positions: All the was fwd it says "4L" In the middle is "N" and all the way aft it says "H". There is a push button on the side that says "4WD." From what I understand, pushing this button in engages the 4WD. Pushing it again disengages it.
 
Fry, it's not uncommon to have to stop and back a hair to get 4WD to disengage, just enough to take the bind out of the drivetrain. I doubt you have any pressing problem with it.
 
I have to rock my 91 to get it out of 4wd everytime.
Or else I'm binding front tires on every single turn lol!
