92 with ADD, why when the brakes are pumped does the power steering pump growl?

ABS pump is controlled by power steering pump. I'd suggest flushing the power steering pump with new fluid asap.

Edit: Sorry, ABS ACTUATOR, not PUMP. It uses pressure from the power steering pump to "power" the ABS system.

OK, I replaced the power steering pump a few months back but the growl didn't go away totally. I'll check into the ABS, thanks

What did you use for fluid? The Toyota system uses ATF, not power steering fluid.

I ask only because I've done this before many years ago, put power steering fluid in and it groaned and was hard to turn the wheel. Replaced with ATF+3 and all was well again. No noises, easy to turn.

You got me, I used power steering fluid. Guess I know my project today.

Get that stuff out as soon as you can. It will cause the seals to start leaking as well if you leave it in too long. ATF only.

Power steering controls ABS? I may have to check if mine has ABS then, b/c my uncle never replaced the power steering pump, and never mentioned the 'Runner having ABS.
