2nd Gen buying help.

Hello everyone,

Back on the forum after over a year.

Little history.

Formerly owned medium build 2002 Tacoma, a small lift 2004 V8 Sr5 which was recently sold for a nice new VW Jetta GLI.

I Love my Jetta, but now that it is very low with very wide wheels+summer tires it gets impractical in the winter (live in Canada) and Summer with my love of the outdoors and camping.

This is where the great 2nd gen runner comes into play.

What I want.

I would love a 2nd car (SUV) that i can take camping, out in the salt/snow and have no worries about the paint getting destroyed.

I have a limited budget because well, I also have a work truck (supplied by employeer) and my need for a runner is only for the times I want to get away or in the winter.

I don't feel like spending a pile of money on a truck that will be driven part time ~3-4 months a year.

I am just looking for input to see if it will be worth it.

Now the real info.

I am looking specifically for a 1990-1995 T4r 4x4. I would prefer the 5speed 22RE models.

I could use more input on the 3.slo V6 5speed. It seems to have a love/hate following.

The truck needs to be reliable and reasonably fuel efficient.

My plans for trucks with rusty 1/4 panels is to remove the bad rust, POR15 the rest, then add jungleflares to hide the cancer.

Any truck will also recieve 31" tires (no regear).

22RE trucks will get a new HG, crawlr cam, header and intake.

I have set my price at $2000 for the vehicle itself.
So far I have talked to 4 people with cars that fit my criteria up for sale.

Here they are.

Reasons?

I am leaning toward #1 or #4.

The reason I am hesitant on #1 is because of all the V6 smack.
Ultra low MPG (people are claiming 16's?)
4 cyl like power.

The reason I like #4
Low KM's
dealer maintained
one owner
zero accidents
you can hide the rust!

The reason I dont like 2-3 is because the rust is either on the door (bad) or in an area where I can't hide it.

I would lean toward #1 as well. The V6 gets ragged on, but it's still stronger than the four-banger, and you've got a headstart on the head gaskets. Slap some headers on it, and you may not have to worry about the gaskets again (or at least for a very long time). The heat from the idiotic factory manifolds is the primary cause for the failures. Besides, if you get #4, you may go blind from that interior!

22re's are reliable, but the internet can make them seem like the holy grail of motors sometimes...

A bunch of 3VZE owners are happy campers.

I don't know if i'd fret about 16mpg.... My slow 22re is getting 17 right now..

#1 is immaculately clean, and when it's not tired, the V6 has some pep.

#2 has minimal rust for a 2nd gen, and the 22re problem areas have already been addressed. Not to mention it's a very easy motor to work on.

Do all 22RE 5 speeds have the same gearing?

*edit* Seems like most have 4.10's and 29" tires. In 94/95 they had a 31" tire option that came with 4.56

I know in my tacoma days you could get a variety of gears for the same engine/tranny combo.

Nearly all from 84-95 have 4.10's. I heard on 1st gens some tow-package equipped 5 speeds had 4.30's. That's nice that they geared 31" tire models to 4.56's. My 31's on 4.10's are pretty slow. Any bigger tires and I would probably not be able to use 5th gear.

#1 looks pretty clean with very little rust though pictures never show everything. besides the HG issues the 3vze is a pretty damn reliable engine. Especially backed with a 5 speed manual
