2nd Gen Headlamps + Grill question

I see that the 2nd Gens have two type of headlamps.

1) One type seems to be the older style box headlight.
2) A more smoother style.

I uploaded the newer more smoother look below.


Was this a factory thing or was this a conversion done afterwards?

Is it necessary to change the gril too?

If it is a conversion, would you folks be kind enough to post links to where I can find the parts and what they are called too?

I've had three, and I've never noticed a difference. Are you sure it's not just where people have painted their grills, changing the look without actually changing parts?

Perhaps I am seeing a difference in 1990-1991. Did those two years have these older style lights?

Please correct me if I am wrong but I thought 90-95 were all the same.

I wonder if that older one in the pic is one of the foreign models (Surf)? Yeah, there's clearly a difference between those two, but that top one doesn't look right, which is why I wonder about it being one from outside the states. I'm no expert on the subject, but that bottom design is the only one I'm familiar with.

I have had the same question and thought is was from over seas like the SURF. I have seen both 90 and 91 with both sets of headlamps for sale so it was just a question I was trying to clarify before I make a purchase.

Perhaps I am seeing a difference in 1990-1991.

This could make sense. I know that for pickups, 91 was the last year of the "toyota" logo on the grill and 92 was the first year of just the symbol.

BOOM. I think you hit the nail on the head. That makes complete sense and it appears they modified the headlamps to be more flush with the grill.
