2nd gen rear bumper

I have a 94 and my rear bumper caps are rusting out like crazy and the center piece is starting to go too. I've called around to some junk yards and none have bumpers that haven't rusted out. I live in PA and the amount of salt they use rusts everything out. I've been looking at stock replacements but a lot of them are listed as "with 15x7 inches wheels type" or "without 15x7 inches wheel type"...I think it's referring to a 31" spare but I'm not sure. I'm not opposed to aftermarket bumpers but I'm not a fan of tube bumpers and I'm on a budget. I don't do much off roading, mainly use my 4Runner as a DD. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I've also been considering stock bumpers that are primed black but I'm not sure how that would look with my dark green truck. And if I would get the primed bumpers, would I have to paint them or could I leave them just primed?

Why not just take it off and leave it. Your rear end will sit much higher and it doesn't really look bad.

I went bumper-less for a long time, I left the receiver on for protection though, and an anchor point. I agree with FOG, it really doesn't look all that bad.

I actually hadn't considered going bumperless. Only problem is I'm pretty sure you need to have bumpers in PA for inspection which comes up in 2 months.

Listen- a lot of clean rust free bumpers out here. I would be willing to go to the local pick a part and ship then to you. You would just need to pay for the part and for shipping. My time is free. Dont know how much it would cost, But I would be willing to help you out.

If it can be done for less then the $250 it will cost me on ebay for a steel chromed center and chromed plastic caps then I'm game

All I did was take the chrome sides off of my bumper and painted it black. It is squared off. I think that it looks pretty decent. If you want some pics I can take some tomorrow when its daylight. It saves you money and allows you to turn a rusted bumper into a custom looking one. Just let me know.

At the "Pick a Part" in Ontario, California a truck bumper is $49.99.. so now the question is shipping. Do you have access to a freight dock - It would cheaper to ship LTL. But UPS is an option. Have to see how much one weighs.

Im in the same boat as you my friend. Fortunately, i was lucky enough to find the only used bumper (center piece only hwell that i could find on ebay and the internet 2 weeks ago haha. Mine was so rotted out it was awful.

Willyt4r - Any chance i can take you up on a junkyard run for chrome rear bumper side pieces (with bracket?) for my 95??? I cannot for the life of me find them used anywhere and i do not want to spend 65 a side plus shipping for new ones

PA vehicle code says

(1) A bumper shall be of at least equivalent strength and mounting as the original equipment.

(2) No portion of a bumper may be broken, torn or protruding to create a hazard.

How much of a clearance issue would I run into with a bumper made for a smaller spare since I have a 31" spare?

Here are some old pics when I first did it. The metal pieces on the sides are cut off. you can bend them in or add to them if you feel the need to do to. I hope this helps. I am not too fond of the tube bumpers, that's why I go for the squared look. I think it looks good and I have not been given any trouble over it.

I think the plan at this point is to replace the rear center panel and remove the caps and bedliner the body where they go. Hopefully I don't find too much rust behind them.

Also what kind of prep do I have to do or can i just spray it right onto the paint?

I stand by POR-15 products. Its worth every penny. Im restoring my 93 bronco. this spring i am sandblasting the entire body and painting it with POR-15 and using their Black Coat as the top coat. its the ultimate of road paint. seriously look into it before making a decision

Their spray-on Rubberized undercoating is unbeatable if youd like to go an easier route. Just sand down the area as best you can first for best adhesion.

I ended up getting the black primed bumpers and I rolled the rustoleum bed liner on them. I think it makes the runner look a lot better. Will post before and after pics tomorrow when its light.
