2nd gen soft top conversion

Has anyone tried or seen a 2nd gen converted to soft top, or removeable top period?

That would require a lot of cutting and fab work, not to mention weaken the structural integrity of the vehicle.
If you want a soft or removeable top, get a 1st gen.

You might want to ask Shawn at Killer Toy Tops about this if you are serious. He can and will make custom tops for most Toyota pickups and 4runners.
