2nd gen wont go into reverse

i just recently baught my 91 sr5 ltd 4runner and noticed most of the time when i go to back out of my driveway it wont go into reverse, so i have to take my foot off the clutch in nutral, push it back in again wait about 15 seconds for the gears to stop spinning so it wont crunch then it will go into reverse.
apart from that the tranny works fine.
is that normal for these?

I have noticed that some of the one's i have had did that to, the transmission's never blew up. But to be safe change out your gear oil.
