2nd or 3rd gen top off?

Has anyone converted their 2nd or 3rd gen to a convertible top (think first gen)?

Another possibility is just removing the top from behind the rear doors back, putting a roll bar in (thing back of a Jeep Wrangler.

I'd love to see pics if you have. If not, I am I just off my rocker for thinking about such a thing? I have seen some that do it,but close it in like a truck and put a tire holder, but that is not what I want. I was thinking about putting in a small rear Jeep seat in the back.

I want to say I saw a 2nd gen buggy on Yotatech that cut open the back and left it, instead of boxing it in, but I can't remember who it was. But that was a buggy, and dude didn't care about weather or security or whatnot.

I think you're off your rocker, unless you really like lots of boring bodywork to get it right. A 1stgen doesn't have the same lines as a 2ndgen, but they're practically identical underneath the body. If you wanna take your top off, get a 1st gen.

I agree with the above. To make your 4runner a convertible you would have to do a TON of body work. It can be done, a hand full of people on pirate 4x4 have done it. Go to www.pirate4x4.com/forums and look in the toyota tech section. Do a quick search and you'll find a few of them. Some people just cut the back "top" section off and some people kind of make it into a pickup truck type buggy. They look slick and I wouldn't mind building one but I'm not experienced enough for that type of fab work.

Just like the red one except with a Jeep style roll bar in the back. I want to leave the cab open, but be able to cover it.
