2nd vs 3rd Gen for Low cost 4x4

Is there a place that lists the changes between the 2nd and 3rd gen 4Rs?

Are there any advantages to the older trucks? Lighter maybe?

I need a very reliable 4-by to do a 5,000 mile run across North Africa. I expect lots of dirt roads and some sand pits/dunes, but overall this won't be major four wheelin'.

I plan to ship the truck from California and my budget for the fully Africanized 4R, sitting at the dock in Long Beach is about $10K.

Would I be better off buying an early

I suggest you buy one over there. You can get a diesel. Best of all is you get to bring it back.

But I did notice that they have diesel 4Runners.

In fact I was surprised to find a classified ad for a very nice looking one in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, it's very expensive.

It has 2982 cc diesel. Anyone know much about this motor?

I have heard and read good things about the 3 liter diesel but have never had the privilege of driving one.

For expedition wheeling you need range and a diesel will help with that and fuel will be cheaper.

The solid axle is not necessary but if you find one great.

Otherwise, I'd say build up a second gen. Our second gen suspension is common around the so parts will be easier to find if you break. I believe 3rd gens were sold mainly in North America.
