2WD to 4WD conversion

I'd be very interested in this as well. I also have a 2wd and would like to convert it into a 4wd considering how much I have already spent and emotionaly invested in my current rig.

Best bet for converting 2wd to 4wd is a SAS IMO

It's a question that gets asked somewhat regularly, but unfortunately there's not really a good answer for it.

I haven't attempted it, of course, but according to some it ends up being more time and hassle than it's worth.

The easiest answer seems to just be "buy a 4WD".

If I had a rig that I was too attached to to replace by just buying a 4WD Runner, I'd find a rolled 4WD to do the swap.

For the price and trouble of finding a damaged 4wd 4Runner an swapping all the parts. You could buy all the parts for a solid axle swap and have a more usable 4x4 rig

I found a '01 4wd for 900, I want to put it in my '97. Thoughts? How much more in addition do you think? I know I could make my money back parting out the rest too.

I had a 2wd and looked into converting. Ended up just buying a 4wd. It is the way to go.

I have a 1997 4x4 limited w diff lock. The truck was wrecked and currently in my driveway. Anyway, my plan was to purchase a clean 2002 T4R 2x2 and transfer my 4x4 system into the newer model. The main reason why are 1. The used 2x2 models are much more clean, less expensive and more styles available. 2. I found The model i am looking for is a super clean red limited 2002 with all the right options except it's a 2x2. I can get it for 6k. If i can find anything comparable the 4x4 models are 10k plus. a savings of over $4000.

Can i use the parts from my 1997 T4R 4x4 and transfer over the 4x4 system to the new 2002 Toyota 4runner 2x2? So i can have clean 2002 T4R 4X4. What are my time and cost estimates?

From my research, yes...your current parts will work perfectly. Time and cost are totally dependent on you. If you can turn a wrench and do most of the work, that will help you out quite a bit.

4x4 conversion

I have all the necessary tools and friends to help with the transfer of parts. Currently the trucks on four jack stands. Will i have to modify anything or does everything bolt on?

Trans crossmember needs to move, other stuff should bolt on... Also, the later '01/'02 2WD traction control may or may not play 100% nicely with the 4WD parts.

Then there is wiring... Lots of stuff changed between '97 and '02 in terms of wiring.

Not sure what year they switched over from a kick down cable controlled transmission to an electronically controlled transmission in the 4Runner. I know it was 03 in the Tacoma world but my 02 4Runner has the solenoid instead of a kick down cable. I would guess they switched in 01 at the same time they added all the stability control stuff. Definitely something to research as a 97 trans wouldn't be compatible with a 02 if I had to guess. Only way to do the swap would be to keep the 02 trans and swap the output shaft, tail housing and transfer case from your 4wd.
