2x4 2000 3rd Gen Pros Cons

Hey guys so I appreciate your help and advice.


Daughter is looking for a 2x4 2000 4Runner with 146K
(besides the obvious of no 4x4)

We live in Colorado so snow can be an issue for about 3-4 months out of the year.

She has driven a front wheel drive civic for the past 5 years here in Colorado. 4Runner in 4x4 is my preference. BUT 4Runner has proven itself to me 10 times over. Finding a 4x4 that hasn't been loved or has less then 300K is like finding a needle in a stack of needles.

1) IF we go this route how bad will I/she regret it?

2) Who has a 2x4 4Runner that hates it? Why?

3) Anything you can do to help, please let me know ASAP. I am making the decision fairly soon.

Dont do it. If you love your daughter. FWD is night and day difference in the snow that RWD. FWD was created to help drive in teh snow and is very capable. RWD not so much. I live in CO and just knowing my wife has AWD or 4x4 makes me feel more comfortable. With really good tires it would do fine but there will be times those tires get towards the end and snow comes, that thing wont make it up the little hills we have in CO.

There are good 4x4 deals all over, whats your budget?

snow tires on a RWD car also makes a big difference. i got through NY's snow season last year in a Lexus LS quite easily.

Dont do it. If you love your daughter. FWD is night and day difference in the snow that RWD. FWD was created to help drive in teh snow and is very capable. RWD not so much. He is right above also. If you keep nice A/T tires on that 2x4 it will make it around town pretty good in the snow. I dont use 4x4 much until its really needed on the street.

With that budget you should beable to find something pretty good around 150-200k miles. Just got to keep hunting. I would look on craigs but my works IP has been blocked!!!! NO!!!!

I can't say that I hate my rig. My RWD Runner is great except for the few days that we get ice here in OK. I get stuck, usually in my neighborhood, about twice a year (Plows? we don't need no stinkin' plows). And that is with some decent tires. My son has had to bail me out a time or two with his 4WD Expedition, much to my chagrin.

I would encourage you to keep searching for a decent 4WD sir. If I were living there in CO, I would prefer to stick my kid in something with 4WD.

you didn't mention if the 2runner was a 4 or 6 cyl? i've got a 2000 4cyl 2runner that can't get out of its own way! and a '97 6cyl 4x4 that feels like a hotrod!

2WD in snow/ice is definitely doable but it gets old. 4WD, even if you don't use it gives you piece of mind.

My sister drove 02 SR5 2WD in 3 Minnesota winters while at school just fine. 4WD does not help you brake on ice, youre screwed not matter what you have on ice.

shame you are in CO, the SR5 is in Florida now and for sale at $4500, 113,000 miles.

Thank you. Yes, I've decided to continue the quest for a 4WD. To be honest I'm not really sure why it's called a 4Runner when it's not a 4 Wheel Drive??

Get a 4wd or one with awd mode too. You'll be glad you did when it snows.
