3.0 surging after degreasing the engine

OK group, here is what happened. My wife has been complaining about a fuel smell coming through the heater, and under the hood. I have been searching for this problem for awhile now, the yellowed plastic thing on the back of the right side fuel rail is NOT leaking, injectors look ok on the exteror, I havent replaced the vacuum thing that goes from the intake to the charcol canister yet, and I really dont understand how that could effect gas smell...but please fill me in here too.. OK so I degreased the engine to have a clean platform to work with. It will run ok for about 1/4 mile then it starts to surge, idle to 1800 rpm's max is all you can give it. let is sit awhile runs great then repeat..It is acting like a pluged fuel filter or bad pump but it always starts out ok, you can really tack it up....what could have I got wet to cause this? could it have something to do with the intake air sensor? oh! and yeah I made sure the cap was dry too.
