You don't if its a 95 unless it swapped. It's either the 3vze or the 5vzfe. Google both and you'll know which you have based on the pictures you see.

hmmm...well I looked and found where it states on the front of the block 3vze...it looks like the first photo.
Of course I don't want to believe that I was blatantly lied to so I'm now wondering if its possible to use the top end of a 3.0 but replace the bottom with that from a 98 model???
I looked over the extensive paperwork I was given and checked the vin#'s and everything looks legit. The seller even had a paper that was notarized from the auto recycler that stated the details..."put 98 4runner engine in place of a 95"
More details that may help my cause...
98 4runner engine - $1600
all new gaskets to change 98 to 95 - $58
timing belt, water pump, oil filter...no price on these

I hate to say it, but I'm 99% sure there's no way that the top end is from a 3.0 while the bottom end is a 3.4l.

I feel like a doosh either way. The weather has been ridiculous and the way this transaction went down is not how I like to do my car buying, but the lady needed a 4x4 asap and I wasn't gonna argue that.
Snow and ice was caked on the whole under carriage.. roads were covered in ice with snow on top so the test drive wasn't so much a test.. :wtf: was I thinking....I'm going to bed, maybe the sun will come out tmrw

the top end of a 3.0 will not work with a 3.4, in fact nothing from a 3.0 is interchangeable with the 3.4, not even the air filter. bolt patterns are different, intake comes in on different sides exhaust is all different you have a 3.0 man sorry but you were lied to. the paper work is forged. the motor mounts are totally different, as well as the bell housing/bolt pattern on the transmission. id take it back to the place you bought it from and tell them you want your money back.
I'm trying to verify this but I'm not having any luck...anybody else think this could be the case?
I surely don't know yet but I found a gear head on yota tech that disagrees somewhat with you and states...
All VZ engines have the same bell housing patter on the block,I know this for sure on the 5VZ-FE and 3VZ-E, 99% sure on the 3VZ-FE

It's not. The 3.0l was never offered in 4Runners after '95. Just the 2.7l or the 3.4l. They did offer a 3.0l diesel in the Hilux Surf, but that was never available in the States.
I just ran it by the dealer to have them look it over, tell me what I got, and have them go on record with their research.

Thanks for the help guys. I gotta talk to a lawyer friend to see how these things usually play out, I assume I will end up keeping it and the verdict in court will be to recoup some $$$. So when this one takes a dump, I'll be looking for more help on a swap of some sort.

Yeah, unfortunately I think we all kinda knew it was a 3.slow from your 1st post. Lots of people have swapped in 3.4s in the 2nd gen 4runners. Yotatech.com and ttora.com are good places to get info on doing the swap. It's definitely worth it.
The seller will probably just claim that's what he was told about the engine when he bought it so I dunno if a judge will make him pay $$ because he wasn't up on the specs of the engine - but ya never know. Next time someone says the engine in a vehicle you're thinking of buying has been swapped with an upgraded one, it would be wise to google it and see what that engine is supposed to look like before you hand over cash.. but hindsight is always 20/20.

Hey a dead giveaway would have been to check and see if the trans was swapped too. I am pretty sure that the transmissions are not interchangeable between a 3.0 and a 3.4. The bellhousings/ bolt pattern is different

The easiest way to tell if you have a 3.0 or 3.4 is this:
1) Get in truck
2) Put in gear
3) Floor it
If it actually takes off like its got some power, it's a 3.4.
If it makes a lot of noise, the gas guage goes towards E faster than the speedo goes up and mopeds are passing you, it's a 3.0.
