3.4L Cold Air Intake from 2002 putting on 1997, issues?

Hello, been getting my a$$ kicked all around by this 4runner. Working on a 1997 auto 3.4L sr5 4runner. Recently found a good deal on a K & N intake, after purchasing soon realized that they are not the same. Come to find out the change was 1998 and later, the mass airflow meter.


Now, as far as install everything will fit and work minus the difference of the Mass Air Flow Meter. From what I can tell the MAf from the 1997 to the 2002 have the same harness, just obviously a different style MAF. Looks like I can grab one from the later year and make it work but then I was told it wouldn't due to smog.


Has anyone done or know of a swap like this?
My buddy at the wrecking hard said it would throw off the computer and shoot a code, is this true?
Anyone know if the air measurements were changed from 1997 to the next style of MAF?
Would love to throw it on considering it will fit but not at the price of a check engine code. Any and all input is appreciated.

are you sure you want a "cold air" system?? Most of the ones I have seen do not actually bring in any more cold air than the stock system---some actually bring in even more hot air than the stock. But they sound soooo much better when you put the pedal to the floor.

Well considering the stock one is busted and the K & N is in my possession, yes. None the less the factory 97' MAF is super restrictive as well as the whole intake. May not be a drastic improvement but its sure not going to hurt.

My 87 is not swapped, but my 89 is already the MAF style. Vitaly can answer for sure, but I am 99% sure you have to swap a wire in the plug.

My 87 is not swapped, but my 89 is already the MAF style. Vitaly can answer for sure, but I am 99% sure you have to swap a wire in the plug.

Intakes are nothing but a pipe, a filter and a maf inbetween, if it fits, holds the maf and is not leaking, it will work. My intake is a metal tube with a filter and some coupler/clamps. I made my city driving mileage go from 16.8 too 17.6 mpg. Not bad for a none working hot air pulling open filter short ram intake. I feel no loss in power and it sounds awesome.

For your question, with no pics posted I just have to suggest calling K&N.

They have a free 800 number on their website. Also try their BBB page for a number.

As another option, you can go to K&N's website and download the 97 and 02 intake manuals to see if they are the same.

Everyone is hating on the CAI but I can say that when paired with a high flow exhaust that it is a great mod.

I have had my K&N since about 2004 and never any problems. It was actually one of my first mods.

Thats what I was assuming as well especially since the MAF has the same harness (minus the re-pin). The only thing was someone I know at the yota wrecking yard told me that the OBD was changed after 1997 and that it would throw a code. Was going to do the swap until I was told that, but seems that it can be done without issue.
