30 k mile service

We are coming up on our 30k service.

I called our local dealership today. Included in that 30 k service is stuff like LOF, tire rotation, trasfer case fluid change, front and rear differential fluid change, engine air filter, cabin air filter, cooling system service... blah blah blah...

then... something that surprised me... spark plug change. The voice on the phone said that since we had a V-8, it's time to change the plugs. The V-6 engines don't need it for 100k.

Uhm... I thought it was the other way around.

Cost is about $550 for the full service.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Hmm....I had my 30k service done on my V6 about a month ago. They swapped out my spark plugs then.

Your right, plugs arent until 120k actually on the V8 and every 30k on the V6.

You dont need anything really other than a drive shaft lube, oil change, engine/cabin air filter change and thats it.

Tell them to shove their dealer 30k service where the sun dont shine. They wanted 400 to look over some things. I said no thanks!

The cooling system and the spark plugs need no service at this time. The rest of it isn't a bad idea...

This site spells out very specifically what you need. It's "Toyota" not the dealers' "make money" recommendations.

It is the other way around. The 4.7L V8 has iridium/platinum plugs that are good for 100k. The ones in the 4.0L V6 are supposed to be replaced at 30k in the 4Runner.

That bites, but at least the V6 has a "lifetime" timing chain instead of a belt that must be replaced (60k or 90k, but I am not sure). Also, oil changes on the V6 are much, much easier.
:D

As pointed out above, never call a dealer and ask for the "x,000 mile service". Find out what the maintenance schedule calls for and get prices for those specific tasks.

I changed the plugs in my '03 V6 at about 40k.... I haven't changed them since and am currently at 101k... No difference in idle, mpg, drivability.... in they stay!

Edit: After reading the maintenance schedule, there's really not much maintenance required on these engines... change plugs, filters, oil, and coolant is generally all they recommend through 120k.... Add timing chain on the V8... I love this thing more and more every day!

Its a belt on the V8 that requires changing typically at 90k, IDK about leaving your plugs in on your V6 that long - perhaps your dealer gave your the better Denso Iridium ones.

I'm apparently re****ed after a 15 hour day at work... V6 has the chain, V8 has the belt... :bonk: I used OEM plugs from the Totoa dealership, not sure if they were the iridium or not.. That had to have been 4 years ago or so... I don't remember them costing a whole lot (sub $40)... in any case, I've bought it new in '03 and have just done the required maintenance and it is perfect...

I bought mine at 33K, but I don't know if the 30K was done. Is there some way to tell? (I have no way to get in contact with the previous owner)

I believe Toyota tracks service for vehicles online? Maybe you can go into a Toyota Dealership and ask them to look it up.

You could also pull a plug and look at the condition.
