I was looking at recommended service points........any one here do the diff or transmission fluid at 30K??

It gets dusty up here. Tips appreciated. Probably a pretty penny up here in Alaska at the dealer...........

Talked to the shop they do the rear diff and tranny fluid on the 4WD models. $670.00 for the service seems very high to me. any thoughts?

Did you tell them you usually get kissed when they do THAT. I don't think you need to do the trans for a long time yet unless things have changed radically since 2004. Now would be a good time to go synthetic in the front and rear diffs.

I would think even at a dealer you could get all that done for no more than $350. Unless they are just that much Higher in Alaska. Tranny flush should be no more that $200. Each diff maybe $50 each, front and rear diff & Transfercase all take the same fluid. In the cold of Alaska I would definitely go with synthetic. If you were to do the 2 diffs and Transfer case/center diff I think you need about 7-8-quarts of 75w-90. I have 96k on my 04 and have never changed the transmission fluid. It is not even a required service if you do not tow. If you tow I think it is every 30k. When I say tow I mean more than just a utility trailer with an ATV once in a while.

I agree with the previous poster, some KY may be needed at that price.

Trans service not needed yet. I change fluids very early and I think 30k is early for the trans. I'd find any good local shop for the t-case and axles. Something like Mobil 1 75w-90 should work great. Once that's in the axles and t-case, the oil is fresh, driveshaft lubed and the air filter/cabin filters are checked you should be fine.

Scan the reciept and put a CD in your owners manual to prove the service was done should you have an axle/t-case issue down the road. Toyota would have to prove the work was done wrong and caused the failure to dis-allow the repair.

I recently did my 30K service and it also cost me around $600 here in Boston, the tranny flush alone was $199 which was optional and not really needed unless I was towing stuff all the time (as per the tech).

:iagree: with the techs advice/position. There have been other other threads where Toyota dealerships have run trans specials for $129-$149. $199 is a touch high but the WS fluid (13 quarts required for flush) is very expensive. IIRC it's $10-$12/quart.

I am gonna visit face to face with Kendall tomorrow and ask what is the price for the front and rear diffs with Mobil 1 lube filters and oil.....agree on the tranny fluid seems very early to me. The kid who answered the phone today was new I think......

I had what my dealer refers to as the "4WD Service" done at 25K.

That service included:
- Replace front & rear differential oil
- Replace transfer case oil

Total for that service was $209 + tax.

Keep in mind that according to Toyota's service recommendation (not the dealer's) the Transmission service is at 60K, not 30K.

BTW, I had the service done early because a good bit of the mileage on my 4Runner involves towing my car trailer.

When speaking to a dealer service department about service BE VERY SPECIFIC.
Telling them you want the "30K Maintenance" is not good enough since their definition, your definition and Toyota's definition are most likely NOT the SAME.

Only if you have the V6 (I think). I know the V8 maintenance schedule doesn't call for spark plugs to be replaced until 80 or 100k.

I just hit 30k miles last month. The only thing I did in addition to my regular maintenance (oil change, air filter changes, lube drive shaft, etc.) was changing the gear oil in the front, center, and rear diffs. I'm glad I did, the oil in all three was pretty grungy, especially the front and rear diffs. I went to Mobil 1 75w-90. Now I have a bit more peace of mind. :)

I strongly recommend replacing the caliper pins on the front calipers. The stockers are not stainless and although you can clean them up they will just keep rusting/pitting.

Jack up the front one side at a time, thow a jackstand under there, pull off the wheel.

Then grab the cotter pin with a pair of pliers, pull (or tap out if its crusty) the old pins and slide in the new ones in their places after you have put a light coat of caliper grease on them.

Just did this myself about a week ago. I think new pins cost me $12 for all 4. I also pulled the pads and cleaned the backs and re-lubed the backs. My old pins looked like they had been at the bottom of the ocean for a few years.

Guess the previous owner never cleaned them. :bash:

Going to do a complete brake job in about 2 months so we will see how the pistons are soon enough...

FYI, I'm at 57,000 miles currently so yours may not be that bad, I'd still look them over though.

Radiator, condenser and/or intercooler

Transfer case oil (4WD)
Transmission fluid or oil


Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions:

Driving While Towing
Replace front differential oil (4WD)
Replace manual transmission oil
Replace rear differential oil, including limited-slip
Replace transfer case oil (4WD)
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis
Driving on Dirt Roads or Dusty Roads
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis

Update

Visited with Kendall Toyota in Anchorage. If I supply my own Mobil 1 the labor for the service including all differentials transfer case spark plugs and inspections and torque/tighten is $435.00.

Still seems high but hey no state income tax right? Now want to find a deal on Mobil 1 75w=90. will require 14 quarts total.
