300,000....???

[95' 220k]

I've had my 4runner for about 7 years. It's a 95' with 220,000 (it had 49,000 when I purchased it) and I had planned on making it to 300,000. Two days ago i took it in to get looked at and come to find out I've got another gasket issue. This is the second issue in 100,000 miles. Long story short. I want to fix it and keep going but at the same time. It does have 220k. In the last 3 months I've had about $1,500 work done on it. U-joints and cooling system.

My friends tell me I'm crazy for wanting to fix it but to hell with them!

Hard to say...if you like your rig enough, they are worth getting fixed, especially if you plan to keep it a long time.

At the bare finances of it all; what will it cost to fix/refurbish your rig versus purchasing another one? Keeping in mind that a replacement rig will still have issues to be fixed...after all, there are reasons it is for sale!

Personally, with our '90, we are planning a full rebuild. It has about 240k on it now, still runs great and uses very little oil (I think it leaks it rather than burns any). The body has very minor things to fix, so we are just looking at a driveline rebuild. The engine will be the most $$. We are figuring 5 to 6k USD to do it all (keeping it stock). That would replace the rig with another high-mileage used truck.

But then again, some folks do perfer to just do payments on a new rig. There are trade-offs, but for cheaper insurance, a body style we like better, etc... the older rig suits us better.

Gryphon - Thank you and yes, I think it's worth getting fixed. Personally I think the 1st and 2nd generations are great. When I bought my 95' back in late 97' there were plenty of 96' - 97' to chose from but damn, 95' and "younger" just look tough.

I just had my 3.0 long blocked. I pulled it and installed myself. I went with the highest quote since they had an extra warranty that could be purchased. I paid $2100 (after tax) complete with the T-belt installed and got a 60k/4 year warranty. This also includes labor, all I have to do is drop it off if I have any motor problems.
