$300 dollar 88 4 runner

just bought an 88 4runner for 300 bux. was told it didn't run, noticed the wire from the coil to the distributor was loose. hook some jumper cables up to my diesel started right up. Now it runs rough don't get me wrong. The thing hasn't been started in almost a year. needs a top and some backs to the backs seats. just looking to get some advice on what i should be expecting to run into maintenance was considering this is the first vehicle i have owned thats not a gm.

with gas more than a year old I would expect it to run like that. Drain the tank, replace the filter and go from there. What motor, the 4 or the 6? Auto or 5 spd?

ok working on the photos but now i know i need an alternator. Where do yall get your alternators from because i refuse to pay 130 bux for one from autozone.

Well, first thing is that the engine will be more reliable, and the body will rust faster.

I think I got an alternator from O'Reiley for around $75 last summer.

ok so i believe i have a fuel issue somewhere. i can start the truck it goes to high idle then stalls out. Without turning the key back to off first if you try and start it, it will not start. But if you spray some brake cleaner (cheap either) into the intake it will start up. Otherwise if you keep bringing the key back to off it will start rev to high idle the stall out. Thoughts?

removed fuel filter cleaned out with break cleaner but fuel is straight orange to full brown now.

I bought a used Toyota OEM alternator off eBay for $35 shipped, I keep it as a spare. You might consider a used one.

ok so my problem is the MAF meter, when i unplug it the truck runs for a little bit then it shuts off. Its running way rich. Trying to find a MAF at a descent price.

Did you test your MAF to determine if it was bad, other than unplugging it?

how would my test my maf other than if its plugged in it doesn't actually run but if its not it does run.
