305/70/16 vs. 285/75/16

Hey guys I have been considering a 285/75/16 Maxxis Bighorn but it seems like the 305/70/16 is the exact same height but it is .80 inches wider. I plan to run my 5 star Limited wheels with a Toytec 3" spacer/OME lift. Which do you guys think would look better or will the 305 even work? Thanks in advance.

305's will work even on stock rims. It's really a personal preference. I think 285's will be more then enough width-wise considering the size/weight of a 4runner. I went from 285's A/T's to 33x12.5 M/T's and lost about 2 mpg's and I can tell my transmission is working slightly harder and hotter. I started a small comparison that others can add onto that might help sway your decision.

Pros:
just a tad more stability and traction with the 305
may look more aggresive

Cons:
slightly lower mpg due to drag and rolling resistance
usually a cost more then a 285 series

you will be at your max with the 285s unless you get some wheel spacers, im running 285s right now with no wheel spacers and i have less than 3/8" of clearance between the tire sidewall and the UCA. of course wheel backspacing plays into this, but the factory five stars are not that much different than my tundra split spokes. and the added width will rub more on the frame and fenders at full lock, and that will be without flex, once you start flexing out it will rub even more. id also recomend possibly looking into a 1" bl to go with the 305s. the bighorns are a fairly wide tire for the given size too, so a 285 bighorn will be like a 295 in most other tires... just my .02

Thanks guys. I pulled the trigger on a set of 285/75/16 TW Guard Dogs this morning. They said they were 1 to 2 weeks out so let's hope that was accurate.

You will be very happy. Im going to buy a set of those soon, I have the Guard Dogg 265's and they have been through hell and back!

For the record I was at discount tire and measured 3 km2 tires 285/75/16, 33/12.50/15, 305/70/16 and the 285 was 1/2" shorter than the 33 and the 305 was 1/2" taller than the 33.
Measured it and the 305/70/16 km2 is 33.4" tall, I ended up slapping these on and glad I did after wheeling the rocks the other day.

Treadwrights have a good reputation amongst the land rover guys...
