30K mile service

Just had my 30K mile service done.
The cost was 340.09.
This included all plugs changed, oil change, oil filter, AC Filter, Engine Coolant flush,tire balance and rotation,propellar shaft bolt torque,engine air filter,all lubrications
Have seen some other threads and this price is in the indianapolis area.

I am going-in for this on Monday...price in Ventura, CA is $404 and doesn't include the coolant flush! In addition, if I want the PS flush and/or transmission, they are $149 per!

I had my 2004 done by the dealer at 29K as part of the deal before I bought it... they couldn't come up with a list of stuff actually done but the internal invoice was for about $400 here in the Bay Area, which sounds about right. The plugs and air filter looked new at least.

30K service

You know I have looked at the mailer I received from the dealership for their services. I look at the 30K service (about$400.00) and I see the word "inspect" but not replace. I have an '05, and the manual says the trannys good for 100K (although I tow so it will be sooner) and the radiator is good for I think 100K. And the spark plugs good for a 100K How in the world are these prices justified? Since I do tow, I would like all the frame bolt connections torqued, etc. But $400.00?
I currently have 21,000 miles.

Yeah, the dealer I got my car from couldn't tell me what they had done. I asked if they'd changed the air filter. They said "If we think it needed changing then we probably changed it" (it was new, I discovered later).

So the whole "inspect" routine is totally bogus. It takes almost as much time to inspect an air filter, for example, as it does to replace it. So you're paying the same labor cost but getting nothing new. The "inspection" also usually include seat belts, wipers and other utterly pointless work.

I'd just tell them to install new parts that actually are important and also tell them that you dont expect the labor cost to be significantly higher than if they were to just "inspect" parts. Or, tell them not to bother inspecting parts like the air filter (engine and cabin) that you can easily replace yourself (and make sure that's noted on the work order).

In other words, read the manual and these boards and make up your own work order.

Sounds about right. My 30K service was $289 and included:
- engine oil and filter change
- tire rotation
- change engine coolant (no flush)
- change spark plugs
- change tranny fliud (no flush)
- change differential fluid
- retorque propeller shaft bolt
- the usual inspections.

The PS flush is another $100 and a brake flush with fuel injection cleaning is another $143 more. AC filter change is another $70, but I did it myself for $18 in parts.

$40 for 8x Iridium plugs online ( I think interval is 25k)
$35 for a K&N filter to replace factory internal filter; clean and oil every 4k
$45 for 8x quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 plus oil filter
$15 for cabin filter
$20 for enough hypoid gear oil to change the diffs and xfer case
Trivial cost of grease to hit the zerks at both ends of ea drive shaft
Coolant good to 100k; check and add if necessary
None of the other fluids require flushing unless they're leaking
No cost to rotate tires, just work

The only thing left is what my current post is regarding; how to "check atf level" with a closed transmission. Manual says to "check" every 25 or 30 but not to replace until around 100. As I tow and hit the desert, I'll probably have them flush it at 50k if I can't find a way to do it myself.

Total: $155

You saved yourself a lot of money doing it yourself, and more importantly you're sure that the work was done and done right.

When I brought my 4runner in for a routine oil change & filter I asked the service guy at my local Toyota dealer to test drive the 4Runnner, looking for a vibration. Before leaving it I reset the "B" tripmeter to 0 and then switched the indicator back to trip "A". When I picked it up, he looked straight in my eye and said that they drove it and couldn't find anything wrong with it. I checked the tripmeter (B) and it showed only 1/10 of a mile had elapsed, just enough to get from the parking spot to the service bay and back.

Did you know that the interval for the Iridium plugs on the V8 is 100,000 miles? Some guys here are changing OEM iridiums for the NGK "X" Iridiums.

I put the NGK "IX" Iridiums in this time though the OEM Densos looked pretty normal.

Just got my 30k service from a friend, he works at toyota dealer and the cost is $150. One of my back-window button was pushed down inside the door. So, he opens up and put it back where it belongs.. He actually changed both the Trans Fluid and Diff Fluid, too. I save some cash for future home audio ..

The bulk of the money hardly ever goes to parts in servicing a vehilce, its always the labor that gets you.
