Galactic's example is accurate, provided you have wheels that are the same width.
Offset just measures the distance the hub mounting surface is from the center of the wheel. The lower the offset number, the further out the wheel will be from the truck.
Most aftermarket 20" wheels are 9-10" wide. Unless you are considering 5th gen wheels, they may be 7.5" wide.
Heres a good comparison tool if you have specs for both...It even lets you put your tire size into the equation so you have a really good idea what you will wind up with.
