30 mpg from a 4runner? Is it possible?

I know that there are quite a few threads on getting better gas mileage. And I know that the easiest ways to accomplish getter mpgs are driving habits, air/gas flow, gear ratios, tires, ect. But has anyone actually set out to come close to or break the 30 mpg mark? Is it even possible with the 22RE or would you have to go Diesel? Is it even possible with the 4runner platform?

I'm getting 22mpg on my stock DD, but I just thought I'd see if anyone is close to 30mpg...

i am new to the 4Runner world but even with the small 22re i think you would still have to go diesel to achieve those MPG. is it possible to fit a 4BT in the 4runner? i have seen it swapped into many full size half tons and net mid 20's. in a 4runner it should easily achieve 30mpg.

Damn!!! the best i have ever got was 28mpg that was pretty much all down hill, top off, middle of summer, with a back wind. i was shocked. normally i pull around 22-24.

I saw I thread on a jeep forum where someone put a 4BT in a Lifted 2005 TJ and was getting 28mpg. I bet the Cummins would be sweet in a Yota.

What about the thread on here about the guy doing a Mercedes diesel swap? What kind of mpg do they get?

What about the 2L and 2L-T motors that came stock in the Surfs? What do they get?

the 4bt has been done there is a guy on pirate4x4 who has done it. but he does only offroad so no idea on MPG.
i get 28mpg solid on my new green machine daily driver with 315x85r16, i tore out the emissions and blocked off the EGR with a plate re rerouted the some of the vacuum lines off the spider valve.
been 2 tanks of gas and average of 28 now.

I'm calling B.S. Bad_V Not a Snowballs chance in Hell you can say whatever you want but I'm not buying it. Even in stock form, the T4R is like driving a billboard down the road. Way to much wind resistance.

Before my new tires I would average 25 mpg on the highway (33x10.50r15). That was with stock gearing and a ton of engine mods, so it is probably doable.

You guys must have 22re engines right?

I gt 16mpg with my 3.0.

Same here with my V6 3.slow.

Only way I could get 30 mpg would be if I left the engine off, and had the neighborhood kids push me around the block.

I'd surely like to try a LS1 swap though. With that kind of hp who cares about gas mileage!

:girl:

I hit 18.3 Just recently in my 3.0. I'm sure I could get it above 20 if I tried. I'm heading up to the eastern sierras in a few weeks. I'll try to break the 20 mpg barrier on the way back.

The best my 3.0 has ever gotten is 23. I always use plus fuel it seems to help mpg and is worth the extra 10 cents. The trip I got my record mpg I drove in econo mode at about 55-60. On average I'm about 20 highway 16 in town. Maybe 30 could be possible with a finely tuned 22re but I doubt it. My 94 truck with 22re gets 28 highway but that's significantly lighter than a runner

well you may not bealive it but im the one getting 475 miles on one tank of gas....keep in mind i drive like a granny and i have 5.29 gears in this truck.

The highest I've ever seen on one of my 3.0-powered 2nd Gens was 21 hwy, for about 2 tankfuls. Strangely enough, I got that while thrashing the poo out of it crossing the Continental Divide, having to run in 3rd to maintain 50 mph (at around 4k rpm)! The norm was about 18 mpg hwy. This was stock, with 31's and no lift.

Diesel swap and you could get better then 30! Import a diesel motor from Australia. One that is in the Hilux / or Surf (4runner)
