32" LT Tires for 16" Wheels

I'm trying to make my final decision on tires for my 4th gen that I'm getting an OME lift put on next week. I'd like to go with a 32" tire (265/75/16) that's good for off road but also good on highway road trips and in the snow (I'm in the mountains in Colorado). My preference is an all terrain LT, but I don't want to get a really stiff E rated tire, so that limits the possibilities for 16" wheels. I've narrowed it down to these 3, in order of preference that I'm thinking about them:

Goodyear Duratrac - available in C load

Nitto Terra Grappler - available in D load

Bridgestone Dueler A/T D695 - available in C load.

I've read the threads here and in other forums about Duratracs and some concerns about sidewalls (that I've never seen actually documented) and unknown long term wear, Nittos that some say wear very fast, and I haven't seen that much about the Dueler D695 but they don't look like they have a very aggressive tread.

I'd appreciate your thoughts about these, especially from anyone that's tried several of them, so I can get more comfortable making my $1000 decision.

i feel your $1000 pain. I went to americas tire company here in long beach and talked to the shop manager who had a sick lifted truck. he said that the BFG All-Terrain T/A® KO would get about 70,000 miles on them. I did a test fit with a 265/75-16 with no lift. fit fine but my dang girlfreind talked me out of them and i ended up spending it on her.
How in the heck did that happen!!!!
 
Sounds like all your information is right on, except for the Duratrac side wall, which I haven't seen any proof of yet either.

I'm happy with my Duratracs. Aggressive tread, but still fine on the road.

Looking at your list: going down reduces aggressiveness, but improves handling.

Thanks Clemsonfan. I guess you're running Duratracs. So you haven't experience anything that feels like the sidewall is rolling over when cornering, especially on the highway? My suspicion is that the few people that say that had under inflated tires. What pressure do you run in yours?

I too question the reported sidewall issue and suspect people running LT tires on 32-35psi (which doesn't work quite right).

Another one to consider is the sister to the Terra-Grappler, the Toyo Open Country A/T if you decide to take the less aggressive route.

How about the Michelin LTX AT2 or the Goodyear Silent Armors?

I don't really know what PSI mine are at. I got them in October and haven't checked since then. I went out to check them the other day, but our gauge broke. I'm gonna have to order another one.

If I remember correctly the people who had sidewall problems were people driving 3/4 ton trucks.

My experience is not on a 4Runner but I ran a couple of sets on my old Trooper:
1) They were a nice A/T and ok off-road. The mud performance was typical and in this GA clay the only thing that works is dozer tracks:D I never cut them. I did have a couple of nail punctures through the years but they were nails on the road.
2) Fairly quiet.
3) VERY ROUND! Once balanced they held balance very well and were smooth on they highway.
4) Very good (not "Revo good" but very good) in the rain. What I really liked is my P rated Toyos had good rain traction down to the last bit of tread. They resisted hydroplaning very well until the tread got really thin.
5) Snow perf was good but I only got them into the snow 3-4 times so don't put too much on my word with regard to the snow performance.
6) Tire-life: This was the "bad thing". I used P rated tires on my old Trooper. I like good tires and would swap them out at just under 50k. They would have been legal to 54k - 60k is my guess.
7) The compound is such that it's very 'easy'. As you flirt with the limits of traction they let-go smoothly and regain traction with little drama. Overall they're very predictable and easy.

I will definitely consider them again. I'm not saying these are "the best tires ever". I am just saying they are worth a look. I think these and the Hankook RFM10 are two "sleeper" tires. They are both underrated, under-hyped really good tires on the milder side of the A/T genre.

As I re-read this it sounds similar to what many have written about the Nitto. Note: I boldfaced the P aspect of my Toyo's. I am sure the LT's would be a bit different but I'd expect them to be good.

Chris - thanks for your thorough description, it very helpful.

As far as the other tires mentioned - Hankook, Goodyear Silent Armor, Michelin - in 265x75x16 they are only available in P or E load rating.

At this point, it looks like Duratracs are the call.

Duratracs are on

I got my lift and Duratracs put on last week, and I'm really happy with both.

I've had the Duratracs on the highway and off road in Colorado, and they have performed well. On the highway they are solid and responsive. This is not a sports car feel, but they tracked well and felt good on curves at 70 mph. While they make some noise as you speed up, it's not annoying and not much louder than the wind noise I get in my 4Runner. Aired down on the trail they performed well - on a trail that I've gotten some slippage before, I had none - they really gripped. They felt very confident and capable.

No mud or snow yet, and who knows about long term tread wear, but for now I'm happy with the purchase.
