33 mpg?

on the 08 the sweet spot to getting 400 plus miles is cruise control at 77 mph i can tell when im on track cause ill pull between 100 and 105 miles for ever 1/4 tanks used

Given a relatively flat road and gentle driving I could see 25mpg being reasonable, even from a V8.

To everyone else: Note that OP is driving a 2wd. Not having all that extra weight and not having 4 wheels driven makes a difference. I'll bet OP also has some very mild highway tires, too, which would also help.

My point being: Don't compare your lifted 4wd driving at 70+ freeway speeds. That's not an accurate comparison.

Sounds like pretty optimal conditions for high MPG. Sea level, moderate ambient air temperature. Sweet spot on speeds.

When I come down from the mountains I can get up in the 20s. Going up I'm in low teens so it averages out. :)

OP here. Can't sleep, it's almost 4 am and I have nothing better to do.

Looked through my fuel mileage records and decided to add here.

The last 4 tanks I've been averaging...

23.7 (80/20 high/city)

24.4 (same)

19.1 (more city and went to a fuel station that used ethanol)

23.5 (80/20)

I also did a hypermile tank for the hell of it as well and managed just over 27 (90/10 highway city). It really was tedious though, trying to let off the fuel whenever a hill was and gauging throttle, hoping I didn't hit a traffic light whenever I was in the city.

I also then did a "drive it mad" tank, but surprisingly I still broke 21 mpg.

Keep in mind though my truck has no spare (or tools), is 2WD, and a gutted interior (only front door panels, front seats and front carpet, the rest is down to the sheet metal. It also started with very few options.

Just FYI

How accurate is the AVG. MPG reading on the center dash? I have an '06 v6 and depending on my driving, some tanks I can end up averaging 25mpg. Is this thing completely off or is it fairly accurate? I don't have any suspension/wheel mods.

It's often referred to as the "Lie-o-meter" if that says anything...

Not accurate. If you drive the same route...under the same weather conditions...then yes you can get a very accurate delta. I ignore it...Totally worthless if you ask me.

So I'm guessing the fueleconomy.gov website is more accurate at 16mpg city and 21 freeway? Sucks, I thought I was doing pretty well at 25mpg avg. heh

I have a super short commute, a V8, 4WD, always carry 2 kid seats, stroller etc. I have a Flowmaster and I like driving around with the O/D off and listen to the roar.

One month I managed to burn an entire tank without hitting any highway at all - I got it as low as 11.2MPG!

OH YEAH!

Maybe in the dark you saw the average speed on computer vs mpg since you said 45-55 mph on freeway traffic your avg could have been 30 something . But I don t Think 580 out of a tank is possible I gotta v6 and best ever was about 370 from 1 tank 1 time !

I find the factory computer to be consistently 5-8% above actual fuel economy for me.

I average a pretty consistent 21-25 mpg actual in my 2WD V6 on my commute. It peaks in the spring and fall with low amounts of AC usage and not many really cold starts. Drops in the winter a lot (cold starts chew fuel up in this truck - cold start runs rich to light the cats off - boo), and some in the summer with constant AC usage and the clutch fan staying engaged.

I've actually noticed MPG dropping quickly once above about 55 mph on the highway, whereas the average sedan will have it rise until you get roughly around 65-70 mph. Totally due to aero drag.

Mine has a very mild lift on Bilstein 5100's and otherwise pretty much stock. It actually got better mileage on the Dunlop's I had before (now have some Cooper tires that are ok... unfortunately a little louder concrete and dropped the MPG about 0.5 consistently - oh well, they were about $250 cheaper per set).

From what I could tell at test driving a few 4Runners, going from V6 to V8 hits the MPG by roughly 10-15% (makes sense, same gearing, and that's the displacement increase), and 2WD to 4WD is another 10-15% hit (which is about the same amount you'd expect to see on additional 4WD drivetrain drag).

For me personally the display is usually 1 or 2 (like 2 or 2.5) mpg off, but it doesn't seem to be consistently off in one way or another. I never make note of it in my fuel log.

Right now it says 22.7 on the dash. When I "usually" hit half tank via the needle, I'm at 250-280 miles, but at right now 265 and the needle is well above half still so I know I'm "on track" for another 24 mpg tank. Of course it looks like I could go 650 via the "eye-o-meter", but I know the needle will drop like a rock in 50 miles and stay there for another 150-200 miles and then the fuel light will come on, probably just before 500 something.
