It has been done a million times. 285/75-16 or 305/70-16. Backspacing on the wheels is critical. You will need ~ 4'-4.5" of BS. They will rub. You will need 3" of lift and 1"-1.5" of body-lift too. Even with this, they will rub. You will be doing some cutting and pounding. A narrower 33"er will rub less with the same lift, 255/85-16.

thanks thats really helpful. if you could help me figure out how much of a lift i have or if i even have one i would really appreciate your expertise.... i have the older blue and yellow bilstein heavy duty shocks and struts with heavy duty coils and 1.5" coil spacers in the back to level it out. and heres a picture too if that might help:

Looks like you've got a lift... Would be easier to see by looking at the angles of the front a-arms. Take a pic of the coils if you want.

I feel that you can fit 285's pretty easily, just have to pound the pinch weld a little (material that sticks out on the rear-end inside wheel well on the FRONT), and trim your front bumper an inch or two.

My Pinch Weld Mod

I run 32's with about 2" lift up front. I had no rub but decided to do the "pinch weld mod" anyways. I think it turned out pretty good, as I gained about .75" of clearance towards the rear of the front wheel wells, and you can barely tell I did any cutting. Check out the photos below:

- Fender liner trimmed (about 8-10" in vertical length, doesnt look like i cut that much in the pics...)
- Cut a fold line in the pinch weld with a cutting disk

- Folded pinch weld over with plyers and hammered flat with a BFH
- primed and painted

- Trimmed peice of fender liner I had previously cut out to lay "flatter" on the newly modified pinch weld
- stitched the trimmed liner piece back in place to keep mud/debris out of the fender

i got 285/75/16 cooper stt with 3 inch suspension lift. No rub whatsoever on a stock 16" toyota rim. You do not need no body lift whatsoever to run 33s

I'll be selling my Kumho KL71's in January if you wanna wait. They only have about 6K mi on em and 90% tread. They're 285/75R16s and I'll throw in my Spidertrax spacers (which you'll need with 285's and wider to keep the tires from rubbing the upper control arm). I'm going up to 35x12.5R15's when I get back. Be nice to sell my wheels, tires and spacers to compensate for the cost of the new tires. PM me

Even if you're not interested in buying mine, I'd suggest either the Kumhos or BFG KM2's. Both are good for a daily driver that likes to see serious $hit on the weekends. They do great in those GA dirt road mud holes!

X's 2 same here.

mine are close at the upper control arm, ( just enough to stick my fingers in there ) and I have to rubbing there or in the wheel well.

Oh right, I forgot about the a-arm clearance. I forgot if it was for an 11.5" or 12.5" wide tire. I thought you could get away with running 285/75/16 (33x11.50) without spacers?

thanks for all the input yall. someone noted that my tires looked too small not long ago so this has been on my mind ever since. i'll hopefully remedy the problem fairly soon

No one has mentioned that going from your 31s to 33s, you will feel a fair amount of power loss. 32s are a nice compromise. I'm running 32s (265/75-16) with 3.5" in front and 4.5" of lift in back. Sure there is space between the tire and wheel well but that is room to flex. At full stuff in front, my tires rub the top of the wheel well.

There is no way you won't rub at full stuff with 33s and no body lift if you wheel and have a flexy suspension.

Granted I'm lifted more then 3 inches- but im running 33's with stock 5 stars and only a 5/16 spacer- No rubbing at all!

I think the key to your lack of rubbing is due to a few things:
*1" bodylift
*stock wheels (7" wide)
*small spacer (yields a wheel backspacing of ~4 5/16", 285s usually rub the UCAs)
*3"+ of lift

Wider tires, wider wheels, and less backspacing (due to wheels or spacers) can be a major cause for rubbing. The further out the edge of the tire, the larger the arc of the front tires when turning.

I'm running ~2" front with 285's on LC wheels (16x8, 4.5" backspacing) withouth any rubbing. I haven't actually taken it wheeling yet, only screwing around with my floor jack.

I had a ton of rubbing with the 1.5" wheel spacers though...

if you wheel, you will rub with 33's. i have a 2 inch body lift and when i had 33's, i could get them to rub at full flex on the rear bumper.

i run 285-75-16 on 3" lift and i rub all the time... ive also got some spidertrax

I bet if you take off the spidertrax spacers you won't rub anymore. I'm running the cheap 5/16in. spacers and don't have any fender rub. Only down side is minor rub on the upper control ARM at full droop. But if you have aftermarket control arms it should solve that problem.

i have 8" wheels with 3.75" back spacing and 285's . It rubs. i have 3" of lift and a 1" body lift. The rubbing is due to the width and small backspacing.
