35's, running boards, and 16 mpg FTW!

Some of you might remember i was debating between nerf bars and rock sliders. Well this delima sort of worked itself out. I had been told by everyone that factory running boards and 35's wont jive, not even close. Well thats simply not true, not for my setup anyways. A bit of trimming was needed on the front plastic caps but no biggie. Now many are probably wondering why, isnt this a step backwards? Well for me no. I dont do any serious wheeling. My parents, grandma(yes lol), and friends all complain about how hard it is to get into. And my buddy who welds for me wont shut up about how i need to paint the frame because its ugly. Well, problem solved. And for $0.

I also ended up having the Dakota Digital speedo calibrator installed and all i can say is it was well worth the money. The vehicle shifts better, speedo and odometer are dead on to the mph, as tested against both GPS and the mile markers on the highway. Im getting 16.33 mpg's on 35's.:naughty: I have the t/b gasket mod and a smooth air tube. I hope to break 17 mpg with the arrival of my k&n intake.

Oh, and i installed a grille gaurd from WAAG. I had debated and researched this for about 6 mo. I could not be happier with my decision!

I know these arent cool off-roading pics, but at least you get the idea of how it looks now.

ps, notice on that last pic the muddy spray from the tires on the side of the truck. The running boards block all that. Yea i know, 4WD is meant to be muddy.:D

ditch the k&n and get an amsoil, if you've researched as much as you've said you would see they are know to be troublesome in our vehicles. Looks good, any link to the calibrator?

Before this last weekend's mishap I was getting just under 16mpg...with mud terrains and everything on :)

What does the K&N mess up? I just installed one....hate to have spent $60 for something that I shouldn't use.


I assume this is the unit he's using....Dakota Digital

Truck looks super clean. It's the best blacked out 4runner I've seen on the boards. I like the running boards on there. Practical, yet they look good.

i have been using DD gauges in my vw buses for a few years now, they are by far the best gauge on the market until you start getting crazy and using aircraft gauges.

i have nothing but good things to say about them, accurate and very detailed, their cht gauges actually calculate ambient air temps as well to be spot on with their readings

never had a single problem with mine, did notice a very slight mpg gain, and its ca smog legal, so thats a huge factor for me

I've had my K&N for close to 20,000 miles. No problems.

Your lucky to be getting 16 MPG though.

For some reason I'm getting crappy mileage. Like 14-15. I used to get 19. I think something is wrong.
 
Yea the 35's are just for looks mostly. My Jeep Wrangler had 35's so thats always kinda been the size i judge everything by. I like being high above everyone else and knowing that i could use em' if i ever wanted/needed to. DFW just got 12" of snow last week(unheard of here) and this thing was phenominal in 4WD with the Toyo All Terrains. I mean, other cars were sliding off the road and im doing 60-70mph easily.:reddance:

Im not sure how a K&N would mess up the MAF, are they saying it lets in too much debris? I have a K&N on the SRT6 as well as every car ive owned. Its not the freest flowing but seems to clean the intake charge pretty well. Then again most my other cars are MAP not MAF. BTW im not sure if i made this clear but its the entire intake with tube and box, not just a drop in filter.

Now that makes sense. The K&N filters always come super oily out of the box. Have the MAF's that had issues simply been cleaned with MAF cleaner and work fine...or did it ruin them?

same i use k&n, not the best for this car but nothing wrong with it just clean your maf once a while no biggie

Any Oiled air filter that is over oiled will screw up the MAF, I know of a few few 4runner that run K & N oiled for many miles without MAF issues, and many other vehicles will a lot of miles on them with no MAF problems, 99% of the time it is user error that messes up the MAF.
