3M clear rock protection question

I posted last Friday that somebody ran a red light and ended up in my vehicle. Well I'm getting my parts list together for my 2015 Trail. I have a 2 inch strip of film starting at the bottom of my front door and extends back to rear door and on flare. I called both local dealers and they say it didn't come that way. They only show piece on flare. I am going to check on dealers lot tomorrow but wanted to know if you guys have it on yours. I bought this new and this wasnt an option I paid for. I'm guessing it is on all from the factory? Thanks in advance

My 2015 TE most definitely has this and I can guarantee you it come from factory that way and was not dealer installed. Looks like clear bra.

You can have an body shop that does 3M XPEL re-apply some sections, or do more of the doors. It's cheap insurance.

Yea, I have a guy that installs the 3m product. Since I was just replacing rear door and flare I thought I would look for factory replacement. Not knowing exactly what brand it was. Mainly for discoloration issues. Thank you gentlemen

Toyota's been doing this since at least 1987, as my xtra cab had it around the bed's front edge (where it meets the cab).

I noticed that my 4runner's clear shield is about twice as thick as 3M and two other brands I have in stock, I'm guessing around 40 mils thick or so.

You can use standard clear bra material though, even if its a bit thinner, as it should still offer excellent protection from rocks and other debris.

If you're OCD like me (and a few others here, y'all know who you are!!! :naughty: ), the shop that does the install for you can just make a pattern of the good side with transfer tape (hi-tech name for wide roll of masking tape), then make a duplicate for your other side. Only you will know that its a bit thinner than the original stuff.

The XPEL is thinner for sure, but it's also a bit stronger from what I've seen. I had my lower rocker panels done, and up along the rear tire side of the back doors. Just protects them from brush and whatnot. Mainly any area of big impacts we did the 3M XPEL. Wasn't cheap but protects them for sure... and then I pinstriped my front doors, so haha I'm sure it made sense when I was trying to keep it spotless forever.

Our Trail has it, but i took it off, already yellowing (after 10k miles)

Would you rather have a yellowed piece of removable/replaceable vinyl, or large rock chips?

You can always replace the material as it gets older, but rock chips will require bodywork and paint to make it look good again.

I peeled mine off yesterday. It was in great shape but I can't get wax out the edge so it had white outline around the tape. I didn't like that outlined look especially on back doors. As for protection my Shrockworks rock sliders do pretty good job deflecting rocks from rocker panel.

What wax are you using? I was concerned about this to being mine is black as well. I picked up some Mequiar's Ultimate synthetic hydrophobic polymer wax that's not "supposed" to leave any white residue on plastics or seams so we'll see.

Tape itself stayed clear but the edge packed some wax and no matter how well you remove it it still leaves that white line along the edge. I use Mequiar's Ultimate Gold wax.

Don't forget to ask for diminished value for your truck, even after repair the accident is on your cars history and will reduce the value so their insurance will pay you for the diminished value. The diminished value should be enough to cover whatever protection you want to add

I am going to pursue that avenue. We will see what happens.

I have it on my 2016 Trail. Just got it out of the body shop last Friday due to an unfortunate incident myself. The body shop told me to come back in a month after the paint has had a chance to harden to put this on. Their reasoning was that they would have to apply it and peel if off and reapply it and peel it off and reapply to get it straight. they didn't want to pull any fresh paint off during this process. So I can confirm that it is a factory item, not a dealer installed item.

Vehicle was hit in left rear side and was a 2015 with 5000 miles. He was talking about diminished value of truck. Not the clear guard

After doing a little research I was able to to locate Toyota oem paint protection film myself. The parts guys couldn't find because they were looking for item in replacement body parts. Called both local dealers. I found under accessory's. Here are the part numbers in case anyone may need in the future.

A very soft toothbrush easily removes wax build up from the edges, and then it's invisible again. I tried using a microfiber cloth and that didn't work, and I had a very soft toothbrush in my car care kit and tried it, it worked very well.
