3rd gen 2wd to 4wd conversion ideas. HELP

So I have a good 3rd gen that I have had since 04. I pretty much love everything about it except it is 2wd. My wife had it before we got married and I enherited it. I want to keep it and turn it into a exped 4runner. But I need 4wd. I was wondering if I did a SAS kit got a new tranny and transfer case if it was as simple as bolting it all on, or is there going to be some crazy electrical work that need to be done. I don't even know if there is computer crap in the 3rd gens that would stop me. If anyone is technical and could advise me I would appreciate it.

IronHippy, thanks for the info. It isn't thatvi can't go get a 4wd. Moreover the fact that I love mine and would love to keep this one for a cool thread/project. Do you know by any chance anyone that has a list of parts to get. I would love to get used parts and spend more on the suspension upgrades. Thanks again with the help.

I am no expert but my guess would be tranny, transfer box, diffs, wiring loom, dash switch, computer/s, half shafts, prop shafts, hubs, suspension parts, mounting hardware, steering parts etc.
Having done a "simple" conversion once (BMW 520 to a BMW 525) I know the project would start small and mushroom into a nightmare that would leave you at some stage so far involved you must continue but regretting having ever started.

COB has one of the most badass 2wd T4R's you'll ever find. If you check out his first post of his build thread in the link above you'll find a list of what he's done.

It's a butt load of work, but not impossible.
But unless you have a lot of $$ to pay someone, or a lot of mechanical skills and the tools and equipment to do metal cutting/grinding/welding/fab work, trade it for a 4X4.
ANd I'm just talking about the labor, parts is a whole other bucket of $$.

My recommendation if you try to tackle this is to find a tacoma manual hub setup, that eliminates the entire ADD system and makes the entire front diff a drop in and go affair.

Not sure if you're auto or what the challenges would be of swapping an auto. If you're 5 speed, everything drops right in, you modify the trans crossmember so it'll fit and that's it, you're done. No electrical work needed.
