the 1996 and early 1997 has some issues when a TRD Supercharger is installed. better to get the 1999-2000 as most of the kinks have been resolved already. 2001 and 2002 have a lot of electronics (vsc/traction control) so you MAY need to do some retrofit work including some sensors, master cylinder/abs, brake lines, etc.
 
I asked a few shops awhile ago if there where any internal differences and everyone of them said the only thing they have seen different is the 4runners all have higher nickel? In the cylinder walls. Otherwise every 3.4 block and heads are virtually the same.

5VZ-FE

The 5VZ-FE is a 3.4 L (3378 cc) engine which replaced the 3VZ-E.
Bore is up to 93.5 mm (3.7 in) and stroke is 82.0 mm (3.2 in) while the compression ratio stays the same as the 3VZ-FE at 9.6:1.
Output is 190 hp (142 kW) at 4800 rpm with 220 lb·ft (298 Nm) of torque at 3600 rpm.
It has a cast iron engine block, and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses sequential multi-port fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets and features large cast connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold.
It also features an oil cooler and a wasted spark ignition system with three coils.

I don't think the engines are different internally. The sensors may be different on newer engines but if you have the original motor I imagine you just need to swap sensors.
 
Don't forget the late years ('01-'02??) were throttle by wire. So you would have to swap throttle bodies if you got one of those. Also, manual transmission throttles have the dashpot and manny's do not. I'm not sure what this means. I'd guess you'd miss it if your truck is a 5-speed; the engine might die when you shift.

There definitely are, but not because of changes to the engine. The two-cat wideband emissions system (aka Cali.), VSC/TRAC, booster brake system, and manual/auto all require different ECU functions. But he would retain his original ECU and tie the new engine to it.
 
Really? 01-02 is throttle by wire? I thought they still used a throttle cable, but ha electronic cruise control and brake booster.

2002 4Runner History

It does still have a cable, but it is only a 'limp home' backup if the TBW goes down.I think it only opens to 30% or so.

Mine is pushing 250K, runs like a champ but I'm gonna turbo it so rather than blow the motor and pull it I figured it best to replace it and the tranny and maybe keep the original motor and tranny. Possibly let it go cheap if any of you need one.
