The runner was originally delivered to Guam, or so the owner told me....I am the second.....though I don't think that would make a difference.
I can assure you guys it's factory. No way aftermarket could be like this.

Here are a few of the back of the truck. Note that there was never a cargo cover. With the rear seat there couldn't be one. Not removed....never there.
Rear seat belts. Same on either side.
There are 3 mounts...2 in front and 1 rear. Top....
Bottom....note recess.
And 2 plastic pads at each corner in the rear....also recessed.
As for the seat itself, I will get to it later. It is in the loft on the pole barn and I need to get it down to get pics. But it is made from the exact material as the rest of the interior and as mentioned, it folds down. IIRC it faces forward when mounted and locked in place.

I wish it was a Surf...just a standard SR5 3.4 5sp w/elocker. Every other part of the truck is absolutely normal for a US import.....well was before I added a few things :thumb:
I had ask about the odd seat on here before but had zero interest-answers as to how rare or not it was so I had no idea. I keep a thick rubber mat and now also a wheathertech cover back there to help cover the bumps from the mounts....so things slide in as they should. With just the carpet, everything catches on them as they are just a bit taller than the floor.

My Brazilian '97 HiLux SW4 (same platform) came with a 3rd row from the factory just like [MENTION=123514]Falonious[/MENTION]. It is really only useful for kids (or small, Brazilian maids).
When I bought my US '99 I asked about it. The dealer inquired because I said I had it on my Brazilian model. They came back and said it was not offered in North America because it could not meet US crash safety standards. Made sense to me.

***Bumping this post for families who don't want to get rid of their T4R.

After adding child #4 and doing a lot of research we just installed a third row to our high mileage 99 T4R Limited.
My 3 & 4 year old fit perfectly in the seat without a booster. (No, I'm not looking for opinions on suggested safety issues this may be or may not be, I grew up in the 80's and 90's.)
We used a 3rd row seat from a 2006 BMW X5 for $150, seat belts were $75, hardware from HomeDepot were about $20.
The seat has a built in AC and Heater blower option built right in the seats. I'm determined to figure out how to bypass the motor controls to use it without BMW controls.
If you have any questions on my method don't hesitate to ask.

Problem is none of these options are DOT approved. If you have vehicle inspections or things like that it might bring extra questions.
I thought about adding a 3rd row and looked at all sorts of ideas, including the OEM Toyota 3rd row they used in international markets but none of them are approved or meet US safety standards. I've got my eye on a GX470 when the time comes.

I’m seriously considering selling our 09 Town and Country for another 3rd Gen T4R and adding another third row.
I’m fully confident in the safety of the 3rd Gen T4R & the 3rd row we added from the BMW X5. With our added 6” lift, TRD suspension MODs, etc... I’m more concerned about my hitch going through someone’s engine block than anything else.
Regarding DOT, safety ratings & crash tests, go to Copart.com, look at all the 3rd Gen T4R’s that have sustained rear end impacts. I will take my chances! Your eyes won’t tell lies!
My boys love riding in the T4R and the 3rd row makes it that more exciting for them.
If you have any questions on what I did don’t hesitate to PM me. We don’t want to upset the safety “Apple cart” anymore than we already have. [emoji12]

6 years later… The rear seat mod is still doing great. Zero issues… Wherever we go, we get a lot of attention seeing 5 children climb out of our 3rd Gen 4Runner. Most of the responses are thanking us for keeping our 3rd Gen on the road with smiles wide with the 3rd row. ??
