3rd gen 4r vs. 97-01 cherokee

had plenty of toyotas over the years, and this is my first 4runner, but it still is built like the others, unbeatable, especially compared to a jeep of any kind. I work in a parts store in charge of the commercial department and between the 2 vehicles, i get 99% of calls on the Jeeps. While the 4.0 is a great motor, if kept up on, the rest of the vehicle will fail way before that of a toyota. And i am sure i will get some, some flack for this, you don't have to limit yourself to a 4runner, you could also go tacoma double cab, 01 02 was a great year, plentiful and still reliable. But either choice of toyota, is a way better choice then the Jeep. Good luck with your decision, and i am glad to hear you are better enough to get behind the wheel again, get a toyota and have some fun:bravo:

I'd say get a 99+ for sure. For use in the snow I'd look for one with multi-mode... That ability to have AWD is priceless... I wish I had it.

It's essentially a way of running your 4Runner in a sort of All-wheel drive mode. You can either run it in 2wd, 4wd without the center diff locked (which allows you to run on pavement or mixed conditions) and then a more traditional 4wd where the front and rear are locked together.

I also had a 5.9.....with the 4wd and no tire spin, it was a rocket upto about 35mph, awesome launches..now I'm not the type to bich about fuel consumption, but it was worse than my 9 second Mustang. Horrible, I think it was using gas even when it was off lol.

haha right! i would freak my friends out by turning on the MPG calc and flooring it watching the rig drop from 14mpg's to 0....zero mpg's....less than a mile per gallon....wtf...haha..another reason why i ditched the 5.9l...but boy that thing was fun for a SUV! not as well built as my runner, but fun!

yeah mulit-mode is basically just AWD,2wd, and 4wd in a single system. it's great, when it gets really rainy here or patchy snow and ice, i hit the push button awd and keep going along feeling good about life. :frog:

How would I find this out ? what would the transfercase selector say on it ?

yeah the t-case selctor or shift lever would have a push button located on the side of it like this

and have a shift pattern like this, notice H2 and H4 are in the same position, the push button on teh side toggles high 2wd and high 4wd aka. AWD.

other years and t-case's also had a push button on the side but have a different shift pattern, this is a later model with the VSC
