3rd Gen 97 4runner Center Console Question

So I have a 97 Limited and my console armrest leather is cracked, sinks in, and overall looks like crap after 330k miles. I was searching online and came across a brand new one which says Toyota OEM, but it doesnt look anything like mine. My question is: Were there 2 different types of armrests Toyota came out with for the 96-98 4runners? One for the limited and one for the base? Honestly this new one looks better IMO anyways. Please let me know before I buy and then have to return or am displeased.

The only other option would be to add in foam and buy a new leather over my current one.

Link to possible new one: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Toyota-58905-35040-E0-Console-Sub-Assembly/dp/B00G0LXN02

Thanks

Concerning OEM, there only 2 part numbers, 1 with leather option, and the other with the non leather option.

Plastic one installed

I had the same issue with my old leather cover. At the time when I ordered a new one I didn't realize there were different part numbers and ended up with the plastic version. From experience, after having leather for so many years you will not be happy with the plastic one. It has a much cheaper feel. I kept my old leather one and will be recovering it with black leather when I change my seats and door panel inserts to black as well.

If the structure is soft when placing pressure on it, remove the little (eyeglass sized) screws from the underside and separate the bottom plastic panel from the leather covered top. Check whether the top plastic panel is cracked. There is the leather cover, a contoured foam padding insert underneath, and then the plastic upper panel that supports the foam and leather. If that plastic upper panel is cracked, you'll need to do something about it before recovering.

Here is what the plastic/rubberized version looks like installed in a leather interior. It works, and nobody else would probably know the difference, but you'd be longing for the old days when you had a leather arm rest.

I found it looks to be a new leather one straight from Toyota. I assume it would also have the leather top!

That's definitely the way to go if the part number lines up with the leather version. You might do the live chat or call the 1-888 number to verify. 50 bucks for a new one is a bargain based on the research I did for a leather upholstery shop to recover my old one. If I wasn't changing interior colors, I'd get a brand new leather oak one at that price for sure.

I was under the impression the Leather option was no longer available when I tried getting one for the 97 Limited Puppy Hauler. I got the plastic one for around 45 dollars.

That is correct, and Toyotapartsdeal is pulling a a bit of a fast one with that listing. They have the correct part number for the leather unit in big letters, but underneath in smaller letters they say that it's been replaced by another part number, which is vinyl, see below with the subtle part circled:

Ryan, I have a '97 Limited with the leather console in near perfect condition that I would be willing to part with because I am planning to do the 99+ console swap. So if you want genuine OEM console in leather, in excellent shape (I can take some photos tomorrow when it's light out), please let me know.

I have a center console out of my 97, non-limited. It is for sale, there is one small nick in the armrest, on the side. Not really noticeable.

I put one out of a 99 on my 96. It's nice having the extra compartment those have. Trim all the little nodules off of the bottom where it meets your console and it will latch in like it's supposed to.

Thanks for noticing that, I almost bought it last night, but had the gut feeling something was off. Saved me the headache! Yes, interested. Please send me the pics and a price including shipping. My zip is 75071. thanks

I didn't swap the entire console. I just swapped to a 99 lid. It will work.

Oh wow, misread that totally. I read on here the other day this wasn't possible, but that is good to know first hand you can do it! Thanks

The one you showed in the Amazon listing as well as the Toyota listing is the non leather model limited lids will have stitching down both side on the top you can also install one from a 99 or 00 that has the same stitching in center with the compartment just in the nobs on bottom of compartment tray and will latch or you can do the cup holder mod changing out the entire console ebay sellers have the leather console lids I have bought 6 of them in that last year I have tons of rigs
