3rd Gen Accidents

Wow, some of the pictures are downright scary. Just a quick note since this is my first post I am new so hello all.

No pictures for this because damage was limited to a totaled front bumper. My wife borrowed my 4TR since she scraped the side of her Subaru trying to pull out of a parking space. So she's in a hurry running late to pick up our son. She hits the curb going around a corner bounces off then rams head on a Honda destroying about foot to two of it's front end with hood squished up toward the front windshield. I drove mine home right from scene of accident. Replaced the front bumper with a new ARB bumper then kept on trucking until this writing with no issues. arty:

So this happened to me back in Oct. 2007... So i skipped class with my gf (at the time-no longer together) adn she dropped me off at my car and so i was leaving the school parking lot and some re**** with a ford bonneville comes and T-bones me.

I'm sure y'all already saw and read it but here it is:

Went around a wet curve too fast and the ass end came out on me and sent me up an embankment then onto the passenger side. I wasn't wearing my seatbelt (no need to give me a wrath of sh!t about it, I know) so I went from the driver seat to the passenger side trunk area putting my hand through the passenger side rear window and my arm got pinned between the road and the quarter panel. They had to jack the truck up for me to get my arm out and they cut the rear hatch off to get me out. Ambulance ride, day in the trauma center, surgery on my left index and middle fingers to repair the tendons that got cut when my hand went through the glass and I'm good to go. She saved my life but I miss her.

My first Runner, and still my favorite. Tried to get out of the way of a deer on snow going 45. Passengers side went in a ditch and before i could get it out i came up on someones driveway which launched me on my side then end over end. The Runner was toast but I didnt have a scratch on me. Shes on a farm (literally) with the roof chopped off today, no damage other than cosmetic.

I don't see another 3rd gen in my future, I didn't even want that one but it was the only thing I could find in my price range. I did fall in love with it but I need another pick up. It does suck walking out of my house everyday and only seeing my Volkswagen, I hate that damn car!

I'm glad to see our 4runners did good. Plus the minor redesign in 99 improved the crash tests. Judging from the rollover pics I would say they do alright as long as you don't roll into a tree or a street light. Thats my biggest fear.

I was amazed, if I had been wearing my seatbelt I wouldn't have had a scratch on me.

I am not your father, therefore I will not lecture you. Curious if there is a reason you did not have it on? I know when I broke my collar bone I did not wear mine for awhile.

So... here is my old beast - '06 Tacoma which I bought off the lot with 62 km on it (transferred from another dealer).

Put a bunch of money and mods into it - then hit black ice on my way snowboarding, plowed it into a rock wall (Frank Slide) and wrote it off.

Fortunately, both my passenger and I walked away from it - myself with NO injuries, he had a bloody knuckle (punched out window going for 'oh ****!' handle) and a sore neck for a couple weeks.

It's currently sitting at my parents ranch - stripped of everything aftermarket - and waiting for me to dump some money into it... Maybe.

Oh - and Shrockworks bumpers FTW... A friend bought this off me (for pittance), straightened it up a bit and tossed it on his '09! The 'character' marks are still on it!

Just a bad habbit of mine, I haven't worn a seatbelt since I started driving. I still have a hard time remembering to wear it even though I got a seatbelt ticket 2 weeks after my accident :nono:. I live in a state that doesn't have a helmet law, I don't understand how they can enforce a seatbelt law when they don't enforce the most important part of a motorcylcists safety gear, and like helmets, I think seatbelts should be optional.

As an EMT I have to disagree here. I would much rather collar and backboard someone out of a mangled wreck and have them live then scrape them off the pavement after they fly through the windshield. olice:

One particular thing that scares me about Zach's crash was the hand out the window. I saw a video of a man who flipped a truck and his hand did the same thing, except it was ripped off at the wrist and was down the street. The guy was so mangled in the wreck that he bled to death before anyone could help him. (except the stupid camera man... why help?)

You guys should take a minute and browse some of the gore sites out there. You'll see what EMT's like 4runsport see every day. Just a hint, he isn't exaggerating when he says "scrape them off the pavement."

You might want to wear your seatbelt afterwards... Seatbelts are safety devices and save lives. Airbags do, too, no matter what the loons that think they kill more than help. Just want you guys to be safe.

If you still choose not to wear one... well... I'll be at the memorial.

Absolutely agree - safety belt and airbags do save lives. If you look it up however, you will find that there is a correlation between increasing safety standards in vehicles and increasingly poor, rash driving habits. Beyond a certain point, death rates actually level out as the higher safety measures encourage people to take bigger risks. I fear that in 10 years time, cars will have radar controlled cruise, accident avoidance systems etc as standard and people will be driving around with their heads even further up their proverbials, likely browsing their ipad6 and calling their friends while doing a crossword and driving at 30 over the limit.

Wow, dude, let me just start of by saying I'm really glad you're okay after that nasty of a wreck. Seatbelt or not, that could have been a lot worse.

Okay, now I have to just say that this type of rationalization is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I agree with you in principle that you should be free to do what you want as long as you're not hurting someone else. However, I have to point out that, presumably, the replacement of your 4Runner, and what may end up being tens of thousands of dollars for your ER visit and surgery, will likely end up being paid for largely by your auto and medical insurance, which does affect (to some degree) all of the other people who are with the same insurance company as you.

I am not for mandatory seatbelt laws or helmet laws, and I have no problem with you not wearing a seatbelt/helmet as long as you replace your truck and pay your medical bills out of your own pocket. However, if your insurance is covering most/all of it, I have a problem with it, because it's costing other people money in the form of higher premiums. I'm not sure what insurance companies do with policyholders who they know were in an accident and weren't wearing a seatbelt, but I would hope that they jack their rates through the roof. They're a higher risk, they should pay for it.

I was at a red light in my mint condition Jeep Cherokee when I was rear ended by a WOMEN in a Ford Expedition (police said she was doing at least 50mph) that pushed me into a van that was TOTALED. There where skid marks 12 feet long that my Jeep made from the force. She backs up and takes off. I was out seeing if the little old lady driving the van was ok when I see her leaving and I had to jump the curb and run her off the road to get her to stop. She did have insurance but had no drivers license and couldn't speak English. My Jeep didn't have a straight panel on it..The police finally got her to admit that she was texting..She was cited for 3 violations (failure to control speed and causing an accident, no drivers license, and leaving the accident)She should have gone to jail..

The best part is that her insurance totaled my Jeep and the other ladies van, then they told the lady that drove the van that it was my fault and that my insurance would have to pay for her van (they didn't) and they told me that there was no way that their insured could have caused that much damage to my Jeep that it was probably already that way and all they are responsible for was for the rear bumper..So I had to pay my $500 deductible and have my insurance pay me for my Jeep and let them go after her insurance. I even had pics of my Jeep that had the date on them that were from a week earlier that I had taken with the front bumper I had built ....That was about a year ago and they still haven't settled..I did file a medical claim against her insurance(my agent suggested I do this) and ended up settling out of court for medical bills paid and $8000 in my pocket..I was paid $5200 for my Jeep so I did OK. It is a shame that someone has to do this just to recover a loss. My agent says it happening more and more....Rant Over
