3rd Gen Accidents

Well I thought I was invincible and was going wayyyy to fast on a gravel road. Before I knew it, the road turned sandy and really washboardy. To make it worse I was coming onto a dead end turn with absoultely no pre-warning signs. I slowed down A LOT and while trying to turn the wheels toward the ditch did nothing I slammed driver side into a power pole. It cracked the pole enough that the power company decided it needed to be replaced....just my luck.

Making progress....

I made a big decision and figured my 4 runner was in too nice of shape to just sell as it is or part out. Therefore, I'm having a body shop do the rest of the work since I have absolutely no expertise in drilling and welding. Sure wish I did.

Wow, dude, let me just start of by saying I'm really glad you're okay after that nasty of a wreck. Seatbelt or not, that could have been a lot worse.

Okay, now I have to just say that this type of rationalization is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I agree with you in principle that you should be free to do what you want as long as you're not hurting someone else. However, I have to point out that, presumably, the replacement of your 4Runner, and what may end up being tens of thousands of dollars for your ER visit and surgery, will likely end up being paid for largely by your auto and medical insurance, which does affect (to some degree) all of the other people who are with the same insurance company as you.

I am not for mandatory seatbelt laws or helmet laws, and I have no problem with you not wearing a seatbelt/helmet as long as you replace your truck and pay your medical bills out of your own pocket. However, if your insurance is covering most/all of it, I have a problem with it, because it's costing other people money in the form of higher premiums. I'm not sure what insurance companies do with policyholders who they know were in an accident and weren't wearing a seatbelt, but I would hope that they jack their rates through the roof. They're a higher risk, they should pay for it.

Just my $.02. /rant off.

That is a very good point, I can respect that reasoning.

So... here is my old beast - '06 Tacoma which I bought off the lot with 62 km on it (transferred from another dealer).

Put a bunch of money and mods into it - then hit black ice on my way snowboarding, plowed it into a rock wall (Frank Slide) and wrote it off.

Fortunately, both my passenger and I walked away from it - myself with NO injuries, he had a bloody knuckle (punched out window going for 'oh ****!' handle) and a sore neck for a couple weeks.

It's currently sitting at my parents ranch - stripped of everything aftermarket - and waiting for me to dump some money into it... Maybe.

Oh - and Shrockworks bumpers FTW... A friend bought this off me (for pittance), straightened it up a bit and tossed it on his '09! The 'character' marks are still on it!

Its expensive as hell to live here in So Cal, but one look at that picture and I'm glad I do. I'm so glad I don't have to drive in the snow! F__K black ice!

I can agree with that 100%.

While it is nice to experience snow on occasion (going to the mountains), it's nice to know that it will never get icy on our roads. The way people drive here is already maniacal... imagine if ice, snow, and slush was added to that equation.

My 4Runner would never leave the driveway.

That's NJ from November till April. And yes it brings out the absolute best drivers every time! :nono:

So this happened yesterday....

Ok thread resurrection here but I really don't have much to do and I feel like I should show somebody this. I crashed the Runner.....it had been wet all day and the street was wet. Came around this turn and just lost it, before I knew it I was in the ditch and I just couldn't believe it. My parents are in D.C. so I immediately called them and they told me to call AAA. An ambulance drove by about 2 minutes after i got out and they called the police for me. My dad didn't know how bad it was after talking to me over the phone so he said I shouldn't file a report. So that officer left while I was waiting for the wrecker. My parents asked for pictures of it after a little bit and then decided to do a report. My brother and some friends arrived so my brother called the sheriff as my phone was about to die, and they sent a highway patrol man. Luckily, he was fairly nice and we got the report done quickly. We got it pulled out, I got my stuff, signed the necessary paper work, and I was off in my brother's jeep watching the 4Runner disappear behind me. My first crash and my 4Runner is torn up so bad...I don't know what to do with myself...

Ok sorry for the novel there; I tend to tell every detail.

So here I am, 4Runner-less for now. I honestly don't know if it will have to be totalled, the passenger side is completely messed up but the rest of the truck is A ok-i hope...
Just for reference, this ditch is a good 5 feet deep, that passenger rear wheels is 1-2 feet from the ground...it also managed to rip off my whole front flare and part of my rear flare.

While I was still going down the ditch, a very inconveniently placed root smacked my windshield and the very top corner of my roof there.

I don't like this thread. I am terrified someone is going to hit me when I'm going down the road. God help this world if my 4Runner ever gets totaled.

Well this thread seems like a good place to tell everyone how i recently ended up here. I just purchased a 2000 4Runner SR5 but before that i had a 2009 Nissan Xterra.

It was the end of life for my Xterra... But thankfully in the process is saved mine.

A few weeks ago i was driving home and was struck at a blind intersection by GMC Cargo van driven by an intoxicated driver that ran a red light. The Xterra took a t-bone in the driver side B pilar. the side curtain airbags deployed. The Xterra rolled into its passenger side and came to a stop. The driver of the van then proceeded to drive away from the scene but was caught only a few blocks away by our cities new police helicopter.

After the vehicle came to stop and I ended up on the ground/passenger side wall. I gathered my bearings, then put on my shoes and socks (which blew off in the accident back on) then I kicked out the front windshield like an action hero and was immediately held on the ground and placed on a backboard.

After a long, Canadian style visit at the hospital including, but not limited too: x-rays, exams, waiting, waiting, waiting, neck braces, some IV's and some intense painkillers (ie: truth serum). I ended up walking out of the hospital with some back pain, some glass removed from my scalp, and a couple of scratches.

Here are some pictures and a news story:

100% totalled.

first time i've seen this thread, truly sad, and heartbreaking.....

now i feel the need to do the Tundra brake upgrade!!
i've had some real close calls....

:bash:

Oops. Icy Norcal roads + late to work = me not kicking 4wd on and going too fast. Expensive mistake, luckily the snow was melty and soft so the damage wasn't as bad as it should've been considering a 5 foot drop off the road. Good day to have a sunroof.

I like this thread for two reasons:

1: reminds me that, as much as I think otherwise, I am NOT invincible. Stuff still happens, and there's always crazy people out there who might wreck into me. Reminds me to continue to wear my seatbelt and be a defensive driver...

2: Reminds me that our 4Runners are awesome, and for the most part, keep us safe, to a fault...

I drive in black ice and snow all the time in the winter... it is scary, but you learn to drive in it...

Well I rear ended a car going about 20mph air bags deployed.

Fixed it up and added a beefy front cross member under the front bumper thinking I would never get to test it.

Sure enough a week after getting it all back together I was able to test it. I was rear ended by an 2wd f150 and pushed into another car. Dent on the week factory bumper was the only damage. f150 hit my trailer hitch.

I wasn't in my 4runner for this trip but I was in my duramax (5inch lift with 35s, its fairly tall). I was visiting some friends for graduation up in chico and was on my drive back to LA. Was at a stop light in yuba city with an old ford car in front of me and a Local police officer stopped at the light right next to me. For what ever reason, the guy in front of me put his car in reverse and floored it. Hit the front of my truck at probably 15-20mph. His bumper got pushed under my truck, rear trunk folded back and he got stuck under my bumper. I was pissed and 430 miles from home. Pulled off to the side of road, the cop was dumbfounded and got it on video. The guys car was 100% totaled. My bumper was pushed back about 2 inches, lights broken off etc but nothing internally was broken luckily. Duct taped the lights on, pulled the plastic bumper so it wasn't rubbing my tires and I was able to drive all the way home.

I couldn't have imagined what the damage would have been if it was in my 4runner. I am sure my radiator would have been busted and the whole front end smashed just due to the height of the front of the 4runner and the back of the guys car. This thread keep reminding me of why I need to get around to building my bumpers making sure I am driving within my limits.

If he mounting points for the doors and fender are still straight I would buy it.back from the insurance, get junkyard doors and wheels, swap door panels, replace any suspensions parts you need and keep it. Salvage title means it cost more to fix than the vehicle value. Looks like you met that threshold, but if the airbags are good it's still a safe vehicle.

Sound advice, I appreciate it. The front suspension seemed fine from what I saw (amazingly). It's just the whole passenger side dented up and maybe in. The one thing really bothering me though is the roof right at the corner of the windshield and passenger window is crushed in. I see no way of fixing that.....

Yeah, that's prolly not good. Your roof is likely twisted and I would not be surprised if your sunroof leaks now. Hard to straighten out something like that.

I practically just got done with the paint job, just put the rear bumper back on a couple weeks before... was at a dead stop at a red light and saw headlights hurtling toward me at a high rate of speed. Slammed into me because he was on his cell phone and not paying attention. He drove under the 4runner for the most part, trashing the frame on the left side. She totaled but I took the money and rebuilt her with lots of nicer components.

After the accident:

His Camry:
IMG_0757-1.jpg~original

The hood was folded like an accordion up to the windshield and my frame rails punctured his engine. His battery sprayed acid on the left quarter of my 4runner that stained the paint but not terrible.

Sad to see all these nice Toyotas totaled by careless drivers. If only insurance paid back your blood, sweat and tears that you've put into your vehicle.

The PATYWGN is getting better though...
