Yup! Bandit, your's was the one example I was thinking of that I have seen built in CAD, I think. Did you post about your cad build? I remember a thread on it, but to be honest, I am pretty sick, hungry, and tired right now, so I'm not really even sure that I am sitting at my computer. I might be drooling into my roommates sock drawer or something.
 
I'll chip in some money just to get it started. In a week I will forget I even put any money towards it, so I might as well help out. Let me know if you are following through with it.
 
I am looking for some blueprints for a 3rd gen...Did anyone ever make progress in this area?
 
OK, how about we work from the open source idea. I'm thinking about taking measurements for the roof. I want a new roof rack/basket.

There's got to be a place in cyberspace that will allow us to host a file that can be downloaded for free. The agreement of course would be that any work you do to add or improve upon must be made available for everyone else.

Maybe dropbox? There could be something better but that's what comes to my mind.
 
I have some experience with Solid Works and Pro-E (hate it) and am in the process of using/learing Solid Edge (for work)... I might be able to help on some stuff. Sounds like a fun project!

Drop Box is a good medium for sharing stuff and it's free. I would imagine we could set up an account we can share access to and there ought to be enough space to put any/all models in... animations on the other hand, those can get humongous in a hurry.

If going with an open source method, the models saved to the shared directory should have some sort of universal format, such as IGES or STEP. We could create a sub-directory for each section/component of the truck and they could all feed into an assembly - although, I can imagine the assembly will quickly get hosed if multiple people are accessing/changing the part files w/o addressing the assembly linkages...

ANYwho, I like the idea. It'd be fun to see what kind of mods people could come up with in a virtual world. Which also reminds me, I wish I had a 3D printer...

I think I might have what you're looking for, I have a factory Toyota Repair Manuel for Collision Damage. I'll snap some pictures tonight and post up on here.

I'd be willing to pitch in. I'd love to model a roof rack and other accessories on that base model. Of course I'm not sure that model is accurate and that could be an issue.
 
If you could get the base measurements from a body shop that owuld be great. I would love to build my own stuff in solidworks without having to build all my on attachment points.
 
I just want to know/ double check what i measured for the front mounting brackets are correct before i start designing everything for it.
 
A 3-D computer model of a 3rd generation 4Runner would be very useful - especially if it were hosted on a site members here could access. I was actually looking for one last week to try out some paint schemes with different colors. I'm not sure if I want to paint the lower third of my vehicle (ARB bumper, rear Shrockworks bumper/tire carrier/jerry can holder, limited trim and fender flares) Millennium Silver or something like a steel blue. It would be very beneficial to be able to model this before I spend $1,000 - $2,000 getting everything painted and installed.

I agree that different versions could be saved on that shared site as starting points. We could have a 96-98 model, a 99-00 model, and a 01-02 model. Obviously there are differences in grills, bumpers, and many other details. Once someone has rendered one with an ARB bumper that could be saved so no one would have to model the ARB again.

I bet that we could get companies like CBI and Shrockworks to send us files so that we wouldn't have to render these popular bumpers from scratch. It would be to their advantage to so this. The more people that see these bumpers modeled on a 3-D model of their 4Runner the more people would buy them.

Has anyone asked Shrockworks or CBI for a file of what they use to mock up their bumpers? I bet both of these companies already have 3-D renderings of the 3rd generation 4Runner.

I don't think I've ever seen shrockworks or CBI post any pictures or anything of their models. Demello often posts renderings of their bumpers on their facebook page. And Outdoor logic also use to post CAD pics when they were in business. I can see them posting images, but giving the general public access to a 3d model? I doubt that, if they did that what would stop people from just making their own off their design?
